DOVII......Vs......UMBEE
« on: November 27, 2005, 06:44:04 PM »
Hey people, the other day i went to the local fish shop in the hope of finding either a dovi or umbee, but to my luck it turned out that they actualy have both..... So my question is which 1 would you go for, because i honestly have no idea which to choose, Plus can anyway tell me if it is posible to sex the fish when they are about 2inches... because im realy hoping to get a male.. Thanx in advance.....

Without question, Umbee  O0  As long as you have the right sized tank for such a big fish.  I think that an Umbee's colouration is far more dramatic and impressive than a Dovii's, and from what I've read about both species you're more likely to get interraction (wanted and possibly unwanted  ;D) from an Umbee.

And you can't sex them at 2", I'm afraid  :-\  They'll need to be at least 5 to 6" before you can determine sex.  Another bonus with Umbee's is their incredibily fast growth.  They'll get to sexable size faster than Dovii's will.

for some strange reason getting male umbees seems almost impossiable unless you can buy them in a huge quanity or find someone to vent them.
I've had a fish or two

Absolutely go with the Umbee if you can find a male.

Lol Madasa  ;D  Each to their own

And yes, Umbee's have teeth much like Dovii's.  They're a highly predatory cichlid and quite capable of doing a LOT of damage with their chompers  ;D

I realize this is late but I would have picked an Umbee as well.  Full grown male Dovii are a beautiful thing though so i wouldn't be disappointed.

1 EBJD (Cichlasoma Octofasciatum)
1 Salvini Cichlid (Cichlasoma/Nandopsis Salvini)
1 Royal Pleco (Panaque Nigrolineatus)
Several cory cats
1 Syndontis Catfish
numerous Giant Danio's
1 Boesmani Rainbowfish

I think a full grown Dovii would be a great fish. I have a 14inch male and a 8-9inch female dovii that are in a 6'x2'x2' tank each....they are awesome fish to have
