Well, most Pleco's have the same type of mouth, a rasping disk with small, hard teeth.  They all eat pretty much the same way, its just what they prefer to eat that differs.

A lot of info out there does state that Gibby's are algae eaters.  A lot of this could be because most ppl only keep them as juveniles, and most juvenile fish will eat pretty much anything in order to survive.  If algae is all they have to eat in a tank, then they'll eat it, but they will not grow well and they won't be healthy.  The biggest different with Pleco's is in their intestines.  Fish that live off algae and veggie matter have much longer intestines as they need extra to extract all the nutrients out of their food.  Those that eat more protein have smaller lengths of intestine as its easier to get the nutrients out of protein than it is out of veggies.  Therefore, when a fish that has small intestines has to live off only algae and other veggies, they won't get the amount of nutrients they ned to stay healthy.

My sailfin loves shrimp pellets. Maybe that will work for you.
I took you home, put you on the glass, I pulled off your wings and I laughed. I saw you change into a fly.

Mine is about 14 or 15 inches and he eats Hikari bottom feered disks very little of one algae disk a day and and shrimp pellets, HBH Super Cichlid pellets and blood worms or krill. Hope that helps. O0

I have this lovely beast, hes adorable. He loves Algea wafers, knows when ones been dropped in the tank and just stays ontop of it, he also devours blood worm and actually going to the top when a pellet is there and slides it down the glass to the bottom.. hes about 5-6 inches.. I also caught him devouring my passed Albino Socolofi the other day.. ewww
