I think these are Zebra Cichlids!
« on: May 01, 2006, 08:40:21 AM »
I have had these two for about 4 months now and it appears that they have laid some eggs, so I really want to confirm that they are indeed Zebras so that I may do some correct research into what to expect. Any information into my current predicament will be gratefully received.

Phill.

These guys are convicts.  An extremely easy species to breed.  I am kind of suprised that they picked the open leaf for their spawning location usually they prefer to spawn in caves.

They are extremely protective parents so be careful about tank mates they might get beat up.  They generally speaking will not eat their young under any circumstances so its not uncommon to have several generation of fry in a tank as long as its big enough.  They will chase/kill their last batch of fry away from the spawing site as they prepare to breed again (they are almost insane about protecting their eggs).

Get used to this, as they will most likely spawn for you ever 4-6 weeks.

Well that was fast, Cheers Adam and KeZ, Oh boy this site is good.
I now however feel a little stupid for thinking they were Zebras! I blame the wife, as I don’t yet speak Chinese so can’t be told by the shops!

It’s okay, I’m not too embarrassed, I take great comfort from the knowledge that I at least got the Cichlid bit right! Just imagine the shame if your response had been “sorry Phill, but I think you will find that what you have posted are in fact, pig nose turtles, please go away.”
I will however go on to say that it is great fun watching them protect the eggs, aggressive doesn’t go far enough. If the cat managed to get in the tank some time tonight I wouldn’t fancy his chances!
I’m not sure if there is anything I need to do in order to assist the eggs development apart from slightly increase the water temperature. Please let me know if this is a bad idea or not, the water is currently 78C.
Proud expectant father,
Phill.

Convicts are really awesome fish to start with in the cichlid category. They stay relatively small, breed easliy and are full of personality. Youre are looking great  O0

I am going to assume that is a typo.  Either you meant a much lower Celcius number or you meant 78F.  78C would be 173F... thats the temperature I poach my fish at when I'm making dinner lol. 26-27C would be appropriate, but I wouldnt go much above 27-28C as you may do more harm then good with water that warm.

;D. "Zebra" actually is a recognised common name used for Convict's (Cryptoheros Nigrofasciatus) allthough also used for a couple of other species of cichlid, so you were on the right track just using a common name that is not so prevelent anymore.

Judging from the picture I would say that stillearnin is probably correct in his assumption that you have in fact 2 females. So Phill you don't appear to be on your way to fatherhood anytime soon.......or do you ????
I took you home, put you on the glass, I pulled off your wings and I laughed. I saw you change into a fly.

Yes those are convicts and both female but the eggs look as though they have been fertilized by a male....

As FNESR has already stated - convicts are also referred to as zebra cichlids.

Convicts are fantastic fish!

Dont be so quick there guys.  The fish that are coming out of China, Hong Kong, and Singapore are all being so selectively inbred that even males are displaying colored stomachs.

I have personally seen a male with a bright orange stomach.  And those eggs definately look fertilized, so my guess is that one of those is a male.
