Convict Issue !!!
« on: August 16, 2006, 03:00:44 PM »
Well like most of you know I have 3 Con; 2 male, 1 female. And 2 O in the 55 they are one 3" the other 2".

Well yesterday I had to separate the Pink of the 55 to the 40 and the black pair start chasing him, today when I got home I saw some fin nipping on the pink.

By moving the female will calm the aggression or not.

I just don't want to get rid of them.

 Any suggestion are welcome, thanks.

Males tend to be more aggressive so removing the female might and might not solve the problem.  I wonder if the pair are spawning or preparing to - any digging?  Other indications?  If they are spawning they will also be aggressive to other tank mates.  You might want to put them into a tank of their own.

A male convict is aggressive in it's own right but generally not nearly as aggressive as when housed with a female. Splitting the pair will definately help reduce aggression. It's really not a good idea to mix a pair of convicts with tankmates at all as they will claim a big area when spawning (or preparing to spawn).

Just so I'm clear..

You have two tanks, a 40 and a 55?
You moved the pink convict? Is that the female or one of the males?
What fish are in the 40gal?

 - Yes 40 & 55

 - I moved the pink from the 55 to the 40 is a male pink.

 - The fish that are in the 40 were a sunshine peacock but now is in the 55 and the male and female black pair are in the 40 with the pink, they haven't breed since May.

Ahh ok. Yeah the pair will not appreciate the "new" convict in their territory at all, particularly the existing male. Why did you have to move it from the 55? Oscar's were hassling it?

Yep - you have one male too many basically and it seems the alpha male has claimed the female and doesnt want any interference.  As FNESR also said - when they are spawning or preparing to  -  they can be aggressive and feisty little devils.  Best to ditch a male and keep the pair IMO.
