Topic: My dad is getting me 1 fish for the holidays. What should it be?

Well there are a number of pretty cool fish that you could get like a Senegal Bichir a nice Stripped Raphael you could do a community of Zebra Plecos or other similar small growing not quite so expensive plecos. You could have a school of Tetras with some Clown loaches or a Synodontis Multipunctatus. They are quite good looking fish. There are always Gouramis that can be quite colorful and don't get too big. I personally like to try and get fish that occupy all levels of the water so that there is more activity to watch in tank. I don't really like when the tank looks all empty because there is one or two large fish in the tank and that's it. Just my two bits.

LOL. I don't want a pond for an adult red tail and I haven't had ANY luck with knives.

How big does the bichir get? Don't they eat smaller fish? Can they be put with my s.a. cichlids? Thanks!

Senegals top out at around 9" with the Albino variant a little smaller. In a 55gal you could have two, they do eat smaller fish, but they have to be mouth sized or smaller. And yes they would be ok with certain types of S.A. Cichlids.

Umm Albinos are smaller because God made them that way, and you can basically put them in with any Cichlids that would not be bite sized, or too aggressive. Some female Convicts like maybe two or three would work. Maybe a coupl of Jewels as well. Basically if there is a type of Cichlid that you had in mind, do some research on them as to size and demeanor and then away you go. Cheers and Merry Christmas.

Cool, did you decide what kind ? I have a Delhezi myself, that would also work for you as they top out around 11 inches or so.

I assume that by ornate you mean a Polypterus Ornatipinnis. If so they should be out of the question unless you plan on upgrading to a bigger tank. They top out at around 27 inches and though they are pretty to look at they are not very active at all. Think log, not much action to look at.
