55 gal tank
« on: May 10, 2007, 08:36:53 AM »
How many convicts can I comfortably keep in a 55g tank?  I have 4 and 1 that was sold to me as a convict but is something else....not sure what just yet...hope it will be a little more obvious as he grows.  They have been together for about 3 months and no eggs.  I know its possible I have all of the same sex and would like to add a couple more in hopes of getting a pair but I don't want to over-crowd them either.

I wouldn't want to have more than 2 pairs in a 55 gallon tank.  They can get so aggressive and territorial when spawning, any higher stocking level would most likely lead to disaster  :(  You could add a few more to try and get a couple of pairs out of the group, but you'd probably be looking at having to remove the un-paired fish once spawning has started.

I agree with Tracey.  2 pair is enough in a 55.  As long as they are small you can add a bunch and then wait till some pair up.  It shouldn't take too long, they breed like rabbits  :D.  You'll need to work out a deal with the lfs that you can return the others once you have your pair.

This doesn't include the other fish that you don't know what it is.  He will be the odd fish out in a tank with 2 pairs of breeding convicts.  I would find a new home for him as well.

1 EBJD (Cichlasoma Octofasciatum)
1 Salvini Cichlid (Cichlasoma/Nandopsis Salvini)
1 Royal Pleco (Panaque Nigrolineatus)
4 Clown Loaches (Chromobotia Macracanthus)
6 Bleheri Rainbowfish (Chilatherina bleheri)
8 Boesmani Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia Boesemani)

2 pair is the best scenario, but if your goal is to find pairs, and you can find homes for the others as they are not chosen by the dominant fish, then I would say you're safe with up to around 10 in there.  I doubt you would need more then 6-8 though to have a good chance of finding 2 pair.

Thanks for the advice.  I'll be happy with one breeding pair.  My goal is to have live food for my Arowana...as terrible as that sounds.  I'll try  getting 3 more fromt he LFS and see what happens.  The little odd ball can either go in my daughters tank or with the African Cichlid tank I'm working on since I believe thats what he is.  For the time being with no real pair in the tank everyone is getting along marvelously well.  :)
