What to do with baby convicts
« on: May 26, 2007, 02:55:36 PM »
I have 87 babies that I don't know what to do with. If anyone wants them (free of course), I'm in lower Fairfield county, CT

im sure someones looking for feeder fish >:D 1st try giving em to your friends, then drop em off at the front door of you LFS, knock on their door, and run away as fast as you can.
rule #1 ... if it works, dont change it.

feeders, or take .05 a piece for them in trade in value at your LFS if they are being generous.  While I was working at a LFS for about a year and half I think we made 2 actual orders of convicts, the rest of the time we just waited for trade ins from customers, and we almost always had a tank of 50-100 at any given time.

i take it lfs is local fish shop ?
we had same problem when our dempseys were breeding  after about 9 months of supplying the shops we could hardly get rid of any and we were basically giving them away :(
if you leave them with parents do they dispose of them when they go to breed again?

Typically what most breeders do is they raise the fry to a stage where they start to show potential for color etc, and then they pull those aside to be sold to LFS.  The runts, or unimpressive stock is culled off generally as feeders to other species.  When you are talking about fish that spawn in the hundreds or thousands you have to step in and become "mother nature".  Out in the wild probably 1 in 50 fish would survive to adulthood, and those would be the strongest and most adapted to survival.  Unfortunately a lot of amateur breeders and asian "puppy mill" breeders flood the market with inferior stock because they cant bring themselves to cull the weaker fish.
