Rainbow fry pictures
« on: July 03, 2007, 09:45:03 AM »
Hi all...  Just thought I'd take this opportunity to post a couple of pix of my rainbow cichlids for your enjoyment!?

I'd placed this log in my SA community to stay moist whilst I cleaned out another tank.  One day later and these guys had been busy - right in the middle of the tank - great!  >:(

Rainbow's create a lot of havoc for little guys during breeding and even took to hitting on a male Chocolate cichlid 4x their size!  I removed the eggs as soon as I could and housed them in a breeding tank where they seem to be doing well.  This is my first attempt at breeding Rainbows.  I've heard they're really easy to breed.  I left their first spawn in the community tank but the fry were soon devoured by their parents, I assume due to space issues

I'm feeding the fry on liquid food until they become free swimming.  I'm also doing a 10% water change every day.

Does anyone have any tips for me to ensure rearing a successful batch of fry?

All the best
Vern

hi Vern just noticed in your post your feeding the fry before thay are free swimming  its not necesarry mate as they live of a yolk sack and its not till they are free swimming you need to feed them
whenever i have fry i either feed them a liquid food like liquifry or a powdered flake type food  but feed them 4 or so times a day they soon grow tho
congrats again mate  O0

yh thats what everyone told me when i was feeding liqifry to my firemouths when they where just eggs, on the box it said start feeding them it when they are egss because it helps with the natural feeding of some benificical bacteria oe somwthing that will grow and when the fry have hatched they will be able to feed of both the liqifry and this benificial whats its.

i dunno if thats what happened but thats what it said on the packaging!

Thanks guys... Since my last post the fry have dropped from the overhanging plants to the base of the tank where they seem to be surviving on rotting plant matter. I'm trying to vacuum this up before it rots too much in case this affects the water.  I'm battling against a fairly high nitrite and ammonia reading by carrying out 15-20% water change a day.  I'm keeping the water at a cool 21c to keep oxygen levels as high as possible.  I'd estimate I've got around 50 fry and throughout this I've been feeding a couple of drops of Liquifry #1, 3 times a day.

This morning I awoke and found the fry all free swimming - most heading back to the overhanging weeds they came from!  And, if you looked close enough, you could just see the formation of pectoral fins. I've now changed my feed to Liquifry #3 (finely ground flake powder) as I understand this is the best time to start a change over in food.

Still flying by the seat of my pants here so fingers crossed for some stability in water readings and a healthy grow out!

I'll keep you posted as things progress.

Cheers mate... I'm well versed in accidentally sucking up a few fry I can tell you!  It's such a hassle trying to remove the rotting plant matter without collecting a dozen fry at the same time but patience is a virtue....  :)
