Please help to identify my fish...
« on: October 20, 2007, 05:52:15 PM »
Hi (sorry if I post in the wrong section)...
I got these fish from a private house and please help:
What type of Cichlids are they?
Are they one male and one female?
Can they live with my Convicts?
Can I care for them the same way like I care for Convicts?
Thanks alot.

i think both are African , and its not a good idea to mix American and African cichlids , water parameters are diferant usually for both types

correct you are alan, they are both african. And both are males. you can tell by the 'fake eggs' on their anal fin.

and for the question on caring for them the same way as convicts, convicts are egg layers and these malawi cichlids are mouth brooders but seeing as you have two males i dont think evolution has allowed males to produce eggs. lol

If they are two males, how come they get along really well? I thought that they will be fighting like Convicts if 2 males are together... Can you please help me the exact name so I can get another female to breed :) Thanks

I have a 200ltr mixed malawi tank with several males and although they fought for territory, all is now calm. Males can be aggresive but they all have their own personalities and can learn to live with each other.

I read somewhere online said that the egg spots do not identify the gender. Is there anyway we know for sure their genders. Thanks all.

If they're hybrids it can be difficult to tell.  I'm sure there's an African expert on here though.

Egg spots are by no means definitive of a fish being a male these days ... many african females have them also.

To be sure on sex then vent;

oo Male

oO Female

Look like a couple of zebras - a tangerine and ???

I wouldnt put any fish within 10 miles of breeding convicts if you want to keep them alive :)

... last night, they moved the gravel around the pots.. I have 2 pots in there and they both moved gravel away...does that mean that they do not like gravel at all? And they eat flakes, not cichlid floating pellets... Please help with the exact name, I'm looking to buy a female to breed.. :) Thanks

... At first, I thought they are all babies, I put convicts together with mollies, for a few days later I realized that I lost (2) 0.5", 1" molly babies when I put them together with (20) 1" convicts... :(( I could not find the body anywhere.. but I guess that convicts ate all mollies. :(( so sad!

If these are malawi hybrids you may struggle to breed them at all. But not being an expert on African cichlids I will defer to AN Other.  Mollies are live barers and you can put them together with only very few passive American cichlids but they won't stand a chance up against Africans.

They are territorally aggressive fish and would only suit companions from Malawi - anything else, other than the biggest cichlid, will be attacked and killed (including many of the Malawi species).  Digging through sand and gravel is a natural way of marking out territory.  If you have any plants in your tank be prepared for these to be shredded.

If you're serious about keeping this pair, I'd suggest piling a load of rocks into your tank to form caves, crevices and other hideaways and let them stake out territory that way.  You may find you need to add a load more African cichlids to tame the aggression but at the same time ensure you are adding compatible fish to your tank.  You will need to carry out water changes regularly to fully enjoy these fish... and this is where your hobby can really take off.

There a loads of examples of natural Malawi set-ups (biotopes) on the net - just try an image search to see what I mean.

Good luck!

I agree with Maddy (Lord, I'll never live it down   ;)), egg spots are not a surefast indicator of male

I currently have a female ice blue holding who has egg spots.

I thought the bottom one looks like a Greshakei  (look at the 3rd picture from the bottom)
http://www.cichlidforum.com/profiles/species.php?id=794

And the top one looks like a Red Zebra
http://www.cichlidforum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1730

Particularly on the Red Zebra pictures you can see that the shots of the male and female both show egg spots. (bottom female pics)

Alt has nearly nailed it with the second being a greshakei OR red top zebra.

Fairly happy that the top one is a tangerine zebra but look up metriaclima msobo female.
