Rio 300?
« on: June 10, 2008, 05:21:43 AM »
Hey all new here :)

Info:
I have two tanks, one is a setup Rio125 with a pair of GBRs *that have laid 3-4times so far, but no luck* 2 zebra danios, 4 corydoras, loads of guppies, and I've bought BN plecos 3 times and all seem to die on me :/.

Anyway, the second tank which I bought last month, is a Rio 300 :D
So far I've bought 4 bits of mopani wood some small and the others medium. A bag of black sand *will need more*

At first my initial plan was to have a stocking list consisting of a pair of angels, 10 corydoras, 4-5 kuhli loach and try a pleco.

But ever since seeing a baby gold severum at one of my LFS I've been swayed over to them :/

So would I be able to house the current stocking list and a severum?

If so, which option out of the 3?

1. Original stocking list with one severum *female most probably, for size reasons*?
2. Original stocking list without severum?
3. Pair of Severums and try to work out what other fish?

I will hopefully be washing the sand this Thursday and putting it in thursday too :)

So let the ideas flood in :)

I myself have just gotten into cichlids so with that in mind I would be willing to try one of the Severum's...I don't know if a breeding pair would be to aggressive...I have 4 sevs in with an oscar 2 very small peacock bass 3 rainbow fish and 4 gold fish.  So far the only aggression from the sev's is just between themselves and very minimal.  All fish are currently 4"  This is all in a 75gal.

first a rio 300 very nice tank i have been eyeing one up at my shop.

A pair would be fine in there along with the other fish as previously said kulli loachs are a bit on the delicate side. needs loads and loads of hiding places for them.

the aggression between sevs is mainly between them selves but if you do go down the pair side of things i would watch carefully on the other tank inhabitants when the do decide to breed. but with all cichlids you just have to find out what works for you. but keep an eye on them.

reptillian even as a grow out tank that tanks too small. its not every day u wake up and decide "maybe i will get a 240gallon tank and have the spare cash for it.

Reptillian - That tank is too small to house 2 sevs and a oscar! :O

Also aren't the gold fish coldwater species?

If anything you should get a 100-150gallon for the 2sevs and the oscar, then the 240gal for the peacocks and bass.

Maddy mad man - GBR stands for German Blue Ram. The tank is 300L (80us gallons) dimensions are, 121cms long by 51cm wide by 62cm tall :)

Best thing is the tank was a bargin and brandnew, never been used, guess how much I bought it for, with no haggling from a petstore, take into consideration they are £499 from Juwel site.

As for the people thinking for the Kuhli Loaches, I will provide plenty of hiding places as I still have more wood to buy, to try and make a sev cave if I go for them :)

Are you sure I'd be ok with a sev, pair of angels, 10 corydoras and a plec of 6" max? Wouldn't I be pushing it to becoming overstocked?

a sev get 6 inchs and angels get ABOUT THE SAME. WITH JUST 10 CORYS THAT STAY ON THE BOTTOM AND A PLEC (excuse the caps) that swims  where theres hiding places there will be plenty of swim space.

I've seen on caresheets that some sevs can reach 10" and upwards :/ and about 6"? in depth. True or false information?

I'd really like Severums but the Kuhli Loaches are a must to help stir up the sand so I don't get any pockets.

Ok I may just go with a breeding pair of Gold Severums :)

And try angels another time.

Now help with the stocking list. Considering I don't have enough space for other big fish like Oscars etc, what can I stock with a pair of Gold Severums?

I'd like 10 corydoras that are suitable for the same temps pH etc of the severum.

Also just so people know, my nitrate comes out at 40-60ppm from the tap, and the pH comes out at 7.6ppm from the tap, can anyone see any problems with this?

And what about the floating plants, will they be ok to have?

Hiya welcome to site  O0
wow 40-60 for nitrates out of tap thats high , were recomending keeping nitrates below 20 doing water changes , have you considered using reverse osmosis unit to give you pure water ?

Yes I have spoke about getting a RO unit on another forum, but they said I'd have to put minerals back into the water, and said you should only get a RO unit if your keeping Discus etc, the really fragile fish.

How much would it all cost me?

The RO unit and the needed minerals?

well that other forum is talking S**TE you can use it for any and all fish. all you have to do, as you have metioned, is add back the hardness of the water. Say for malawi's or hard water fish ect you can use the by-product of the reverse osmosis system, or the so called waste water which is naturally high on the ph scale.

with regards to maintence, change the filters inside the reverse osmosis system periodically this is to ensure that it removes all the desired elements.

and with regards to adding back the hardness there is a product called reverse osmosis plus which you add x amount of reverse osmosis plus for x amount of litres.

a 50 gallon per day osmosis system will fetch around 40 - 50 quid if you know where to look for it  ;) . the more output of the system say 70 - 100 gallon system will have a higher the price. then theres the systems with the resins attached to them that will also be a higher price.

the reverse osmosis plus will be a bit more pricey at around £45+

but if you have a look at the osmosis system in a month or so of use its disgusting to think that we drink that kind of water let alone have our fish live in it!!!

hope this helps?

which size RO unit should I go for?

and I'd have to attach it to my tank everytime I wanted to do a water change right?

well depends on how often you change your water. how many litres you change a week? then you got to decide if you want it running all the time and have the output of the water into a watter butt. or a food grade barrel. there are a few going on the website on e-bay. but that u.k dnt know for u.s.

i can send you a couple of links if you want. if you live in the u.k that is. if the u.s adams probably the man to speak to.
