Are Juwel cichlids mouth brooders?
« on: September 05, 2008, 10:17:28 AM »
I was told Juwel cichlids are mouth brooders BUT my breeding pair layed eggs on a rock.

Many African cichlids are mouth brooders but Jewel's are not, as evidenced by your pair laying eggs

1 EBJD (Cichlasoma Octofasciatum)
1 Salvini Cichlid (Cichlasoma/Nandopsis Salvini)
1 Royal Pleco (Panaque Nigrolineatus)
Several cory cats
1 Syndontis Catfish
numerous Giant Danio's
1 Boesmani Rainbowfish

Males tend to be more colorful, especially as adults.

This is my male.

This is my female.

As you can see, the male is more colorful.

Thanks Sonny.  I was told the markings on the caudal fin differ between sexes but the colouring of your pair is quite obvious (as is the swollen abdomen).

Lovely fish by the way!

Yes, the difference is quite pronounced.

Vicious little fellas though, don't you find?  >:D

I thought of creating a West African biotope a few years ago, but struggled to find anything to live happily alongside them!

Gosh, yeah loads. Most have been posted on this forum over the past few years. Rather than risk upsetting the mods by posting them again, if there's anything specific you want to see let me know and I'll PM them to you.

My collection is as my signature below..

Saying that, I am thinking of posting pictures of all my (current) set ups in the photos section on this forum.  Something I've not done for a while as this year's been rather hectic.

Jewels were the most aggressive fish I've ever owned

They're the second most aggressive I've had, after a male Melanochromis Auratus who would happily take on a 15" Pleco.
