How To Sex Jack Dempsey's
A few years back it was fairly easy to sex JD's the males had pointed dorsal and anal fins and the females were rounded , however with the advent of hormonal foods to enhance the colours of juvenile fish this has gone by the board , The only semi reliable way to sex them these days is by the spangles on the head of the fish , females the spangles go all way down to bottom of head and become more blotchy as the spots merge and males dont .(some females have less spangles than others and some males more than others hence a bit of a no mans land there but fortunately those are lot less common)

the finnage in the 2 pictures are very similar and its the colour on the head which shows the diferances between the 2 sexes.
i was amazed tho when doing some research on JD's how many sites and articles on the net still say you sex them by the fins and only a couple mentioned the spangles on the head
