Uaru
« on: July 28, 2009, 08:16:30 AM »
Im just curious if anyone has had any experience in keeping Uaru?  Ive never kept them before.  Ive had some shipped to me, from 3 different places now and none ever seem to come in, in very good shape.  The have either been DOD  or always look very sickly when I get them, whether it's in the Juvenile size or sub adult.  I always wind up getting rid of the few that live.  Are they known for being a hard Cichlid to ship for some reason?  I know  in the Tetra family, Emperor Tetras are an extreme pain to ship, so I thought maybe there may be some kind of problems with this certain Cichlid?

Also,  Ive heard, personality wise, they are kind like that of a Severum or Chocolates. I never have problems with Choclates or Severums, but havent had an ounce of luck with Uaru, so far. Even when I see them at local fish stores, and thats rare, but when I do, they are always weak looking?

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with them or any related info on Uaru being difficult?  Thanks Just wondering.  :-X :-\ ;).  As soon as you think you know everything, something else comes along, which you learn about in this hobby.  ;) ;D

I have no personal experience keeping them, but they've been getting more and more common over here in the last 3 or 4 years.  Mystic has a pair in one of her tanks and a number of juveniles in another tank and she's never said anything to me about them being difficult to keep.  I'm not sure if the ones I've seen here are being bred by someone in the country or if they're coming in via shipments.

My understanding is that they're considered easy-ish to keep, and more like Severums personality-wise.  A little flighty when young, but getting quite snotty as they mature.

Where are you getting the fish from and what sort of problems are they arriving with, the ones that actually arrive alive?

Various things like: their finnage always looks bad, or they just are extremely skittish when I keep them.  They swim, like it's a chore for them , yet, dart around and act skittish whenever someone walks across the room and I've ordered them from 3 different places now, and it's always the same thing. They all just huddle together, never swim around, even after a week or so, Unless I move around the room, then they are skittish like I said before.  :-X It's like, how fish act when you 1st  put them into a new tank, only they are the same way all the time.

Any other fish that I have ordered, over the years, Ive never had this problem, other than the 1st few days. Very strange and frustrating!  I guess I just happen to be getting bad luck with them.  My Angels dont even act like this after a week.  :-\    Id settle for just 1 Uaru thats acts normal,.  :-\. But I refuse to give up.  My tank 's temperature and numbers are set for the Angels' liking, so Im not sure if that might be effecting it or not?  O0

Ok,  maybe I  just happen to going thru a little bit of bad luck then, with ordering fish.  I realize that ordering fish through shipping, isnt always a bulletproof thing for the fish.  :-\    I just assumed it with the Uarus,  because it was the 1st time ordering them, so I wasnt sure if it was just that species problem or not.  O0

Thanks Guys!

One thing I learned when fish are shipped the acclimation time should be tripled and done very slowly.  I do the drip method and test the water in the bag before starting the dips and then when the bag has had a 100% water change just to make sure everything matches. Be sure to float bag at least 20 mins in tank before you even open it to ensure the temp is good.

Hey Guys!!

Got the Uarus in today are they are very healty.  Im pleasantly surprised at how beautiful these fish really are!  I kept 1 and sold the  problem only, due to space.  The only problem I ran into was, The Rokteil Severum, that I rescued about a month ago, I wound up taking back to the store and selling.  My one picked on, clamped finned, mild mattered Severum, turned into an instant terror, once I let the Uaru out.  :-X :-\ She never bother any Angels before either and she started chasing them also.  So I rearranged the caves, took her out for about 2 hours, then placed her back in and in about a half hours' time.   :-\  Oh well.

This just goes to show you how cichlids temperament, can change with the snap of your finger, LOL  :what:  She must have an avid hate of Uarus for some reason, LOL.  Go figure a Cichlid right?  :-\ :o ;D Oh, Ill just have to try another Severum,  once the Chocolate comes in. Just want to share another strange experience.  O0
