I know many many people that use pool sand for their Ciclids. It has never been a problem. You can get it in white or some like black. Make sure it is washed real good before using. Play sand is pretty dirty. It really has to be washed and washed to get all the dirt out. I use Eco-Complete Cichlid Sand which is black and white (like salt and pepper) because I had a ph of 6.8. It will buffer the water up. It raised mine to 7.8 right where I wanted it. It is more expensive but I really like it for its color and buffering the water. I would check with another pool supply.
