bloated sterbai

Any ideas what's up with this fella?  Close up it looks full of air.   ???

Ummm it does look like he has taken air.

Has he eaten anything unusual?

Try adding epsom salts at 1tbls for every 5 gals and see if that helps.

cory cats will go to surface and take air, but that looks a bit to big for air and still be on the bottom.

What has it been getting to eat?
did this swelling appear overnight or over time?

I would add Epsom salts and see what happens

Thanks guys...

It's developed over time Gerry, in the last 6 weeks to be precised.  He's been eating the usual catfish pellets, the same as the others.

There's no effect on his bouyancy, which I'd expect with an air sack this large, however it's virtually translucent, doesn't inflate/deflate with gill movement or eating, yet looks like it's about to 'pop' at any minute.  It doesn't appear to affect swimming or eating and he sifts through the sand with his other buddies as normal, in fact head on he looks like he's pearched on a space hopper (remember those?).

Epsom salts, ok.... but will salt be safe with corys?  And will ES affect the rest of my tank's inhabitants?

Epsom salts is not salt it is Hydrated magnesium sulfate.  It will draw any fluid out.  We humans use it for sprains and swelling.

Epsomsalts will do no harm to the cory or any other fish, just give you more poop to clean lol

OK, well I've dosed the water and have not noticed any improvement.  The 'growth' hasn't affected his balance at all and he's still ploughing through the sand with his buddies every morning and evening, which makes me think that this can't be an air sack at all.  I'm tempted to fish him out and take a closer look.  He's in amongst a breeding group and so teared fins and scars are common place but I've not seen anything like this before....

Sounds more like a tumor or some kind of growth.  As this point if he is eating and swimming ok, would leave him.  If he looks like he is suffering then would thinking about doing somthing else.

He doesn't appear as inflated as before, although it's still noticeable.  He still seems to be carrying on regardless though.
