hiya everyone!
« on: December 10, 2009, 10:09:43 PM »
I'm new here.. I live in Wisconsin.. I have three cichlids currently  .. one is a firemouth cichlid named Hades, the other 2 are convict cichlids named Zeus and Aphrodite.  Hades is about 2inch and Zeus and Aphrodite is roughly 1 in to 1in and a half.. their tankmate is a Pleco which 12 inches.. In another tank I have a 4 inch bluegill that I've owned for 2 years.. We are looking to set up an oscar tank next yet hopefully within the next week! I'm also looking at buying more cichlids possibly after my oscars are set up! I've been doing a lot of research to learn about oscars and cichlids, so I've joined this forum to learn more about these beautiful scaled family members of mine!  :)

Hello and a big Welcome.  :)

Sound`s like you have some nice setup`s.  Could you tell us alittle more about them.  Like tank size, what filter`s your using, if you have any live plant`s.  Ya just about everything.  ;D
I love to see how other`s setup, and run there tank`s.

Welcome to the site O0
You will fit right in as many here have MTS (multi tank syndrome).  ;)

Whatever we can do to help let us know.  What size tank are you thinking for your O's?

Looking forward to hearing more :)

Thanks everyone! I actually just bought 2 more convict cichlids tonight females!!! I'm so excited because I already had two males .. so my five cichlids live in a 45 gallon tank with a Marineland HOT Magnum Canister Filter with Bio-Wheel attached I'm hoping to add a couple of jack dempsey cichlids also.. I'm hoping my convicts will mate, I'm also starting to hatch my own brine shrimp eggs in case they do give me babies and make me a grandma!  ;D
.. my blue gill lives in a 20 gallon tank I cant remember exactly what kind of filter he has .. its a canister filter however ..
I bought 2 more magnum canister filters (I  love them things! they keep the water clean and sparkly without a lot of fuss and trouble) anyways I bought those for the oscar tank which is a 250 gallon tank. My oscars will be bought after christmas as I'm still reading up on them and doing as much research as I can I want to know everything! I will be getting tiger oscars the orange and black and I'm going to get the smallest ones possible.
Today at my pet store they let me hand feed the oscars some crickets and I have got to say that .. I was just blown away with how friendly and careful they were and oh so eager, it just made me fall even more in love with oscars!
All of my tanks are kept between 76 and 80 degrees, I dont have live plants yet only plastic I'm still considering live ones yet . My bluegill has a 2 inch pleco and my cichlids have a 12 in pleco.. my oscars probably wont have any.. perhaps a couple of crabs though.. undecided yet.
So yeah, I'ma fish nerd I have two tanks up and running and one more on the way.. I will take pics as soon as I can probably early next week since this weekend is packed full already.. if anyone has any great tips about oscars I'll gladly accept it!

welcome to the site O0

just to let you know cons breed like rabbits and are very aggressive when breeding.

So you'll need a fairly long tank and think of what you can do with all the fry as most LFS won't take many off you.

Well my mother wants some along with a few others I wont have any problems getting rid of them besides they are in a 45 gallon tank and like I stated I have a 250 gallon also so I'm not worried about it, I've given everything a lot of thought  even researched for a few months on convicts alone before I got a single convict so I know what I'm getting into but thanks! As far as selling them I would never do that anyways.

Hm, I wouldn`t add the JD`s to the Con`s tank.
One JD should really have a 55gal.  Could add them to the Oscar tank once the Oscar`s have grown a bit, want the JD`s smaller, but not bite size.  O0

So maybe then is what would be best is just to have the pairs in separate tanks and have 4 tanks .. my oscars.. bluegill, and two tanks for each pair? The jacks are gorgeous cichlids but if you say its not a good idea then I will restrain myself from getting any I dont want to make mistakes and be the reason my cichlids die, I want them to be as happy as they make me everytime I sit and watch the tank lol .. ok so then if I put the pairs in seperate tanks (2 each tank) what size tank would be best for them? Oh and also this is extremely important.. is my firemouth safe in a pair tank.. she normally stays away from the convicts and keeps to herself on the other side of the tank.. but lets say a pair had babies would they go out of their way to attack her even if she didnt go by them? Also could my firemouth go in the oscar tank, shes a nice size already roughly 3 inches?

By the way I love this site everyone is so nice and helpful and I dont feel like a dingbat for asking a hundred million questions! lol
