Wad-up from Florida Panhandle
« on: December 17, 2009, 03:58:45 PM »
Just joined up bout a week ago...been readin' some of the post and decided it was time to speak out.  Just recently decided to get into the fish keeping hobby.  Always been facinated with it...just never got around to jumpin' in.  Been
a certified diver for about 25 yrs.  Won't be goin' with a marine tank though..the gulf of mexico is my saltwater tank  :)
Anyway, I'm starting off with a 75 gal tank which is still in the cycling stage(bout 3 wks now).  Really like these cichlids,
just not completly sure which ones I'm gonna go with.  Leaning toward an Oscar, green terror, firemouth, or jack dempsey.  Not sure if all those would be compatible in the same tank though.  I mean, you read so many different things on different sites.  I've done some research and realize that with the size of these fish and the size of the tank I'm starting with, I will probably need to have no more than 6 to 8 fish...depending on which I choose to go with.  Am I right, or no!!  Anyway, this really seems to be a VERY good, friendly site with VERY knowledgeable hobbiest.  Any input would be much appreciated as I'm in no big hurry because as I stated, I'm still cycling my tank.  I doing a fishless cycle
so I still have few weeks left to learn as much as I can about these fish.  I'm looking foward to this and really feel I'm going to enjoy it and be good at it.  I mean, I REALLY enjoy swimming/diving with all the fishes in the sea(sharks included) 8)  Hope I haven't bored ya'll to much!!!!!!!

welcome to the site and well done on researching first O0

A 75 gallon will hold 2 or 3 American cichlids depending on what you go for, if your wanting 8+ cichlids then your going to have to go African as these are usually overstocked to spread aggression

Thanks Gerry & Storm.      Gerry, I'm kindda leaning on getting 1 Oscar(tiger), 2 Firemouths, and 1 Green Terror...could I live comfortably with that with the tank I have...ya think?  BTW ya'll, I voted for this site at Aqua Rank O0

that would overstock your 75
an O and a gt or an O and 2 fm,s , a gt can get almost as big as an O

125 Gal 1 Tiger O, 1 Jack Dempsey, 1 FM, 5 Silver Dollars
90 Gal 1 Lutino O, 1 FM, 1 Blue Acara, 1 Rainbow Shark

Welcome vlcane. I'm pretty new here myself, and yes these guys are a nice bunch. Unlike some other forums I've watched!
I don't know just how much you've looked into cichlids, but there are some lovely verities of medium (around 4/6 inch), and dwarf (2/4 inch) breeds that will give you more room to play with in your size tank, and also allot more interesting behavior and colors to look at and watch (i.e I watched my Blue acaras spawn again last night, and how they will chase the plec away but tolerate the jewel to hang around them).
All the best in what ever you choose. Cheers chief!
I am in my own little world, but it's okay, they know me here.
