HELP I dont understand whats going on with my convicts
« on: December 28, 2009, 10:22:41 PM »
So as you all know I had 4 convicts 2 breeding pairs.. well I moved one pair into a seperate tank and during the night the male committed suicide and I found him outside of the tank the next morning dead.. so I put the female into another tank and shes doing great. I cleaned out the other tank fresh gravel everything.. let the tank sit 24 hours all the levels were ideal the last time I checked and I added my other breeding pair to the tank earlier today.. however I went out to check the tank the heater etc and I found my female laying on the floor almost dead! .
Now this tank doesnt have holes the top fits nicely around their filter, heater and air tubing it does have a section in it that is 2"x4" that is in the back and I found her in front of the tank on the floor .. Why are they doing this? There wasnt any problems when they were in a community tank besides them fighting with tankmates .. Why are my connys committing suicide for??  :'(

being moved to a new home can lead to aggression as they reset dominance and territories or it could be the male was aggressive as he was ready to breed and she wasn't, so the female may have been jumping to get away from the male.

What size is the tank your trying them in

Sometimes when fish jump out of the water it could mean there is something toxic in the water, water temp to low or to high. What did you clean the tank with?  You also may want to check for stray voltage.  Make sure everything is working right.

This response makes the most sense , she is just slightly smaller than 2 inches but I figured that he would know to wait you know like the proper gentlemen .. Is she in danger? Should I remove her? She is looking really good and I'm surprised I thought for sure she'd be dead she was hard and dried out by time I found her, but I put her in thinking maybe just maybe!.
Their tank size is 55 us gallon temp is kept at 75 and I only clean their tanks with VERY hot water no soaps or cleaners nothing just paper towel and water their ph and amm levels are perfect I use stress coat by API and ph 7.0 and an amm reducer if necessary .. we checked and there is no stray voltage everything seems to be in working order.. I have blocked off all holes in the tank to keep her from jumping again.. Is there any other ideas or suggestions?

75 is a tad on the low side for temp i think it should be nearer 79-80

only thing I can think of to help is hide outs and things to break up the views in the tank length wise so its made into small areas where one fish can't get direct view to the other and gives markers for territories (hope that makes sense)
