You should have no readings on ammonia... Is the goal.

sounds like your under filtered if ammonia is not fully being converted.
With HOB (hang on back) filtration you want the filter flow rate to be tank vol x 10
With Canister you want it to be tank vol x 5

Sorry bud, can't remember every post I read between the different forums

Looks like you've had your question answered but you really want 0.0 Ammonia and that is done with appropriate filtration and enough bio media in that filtration.   O0

1 EBJD (Cichlasoma Octofasciatum)
1 Salvini Cichlid (Cichlasoma/Nandopsis Salvini)
1 Royal Pleco (Panaque Nigrolineatus)
Several cory cats
1 Syndontis Catfish
numerous Giant Danio's
1 Boesmani Rainbowfish

Hey JOE I know what filter system I'm going to use .  I wasn't sure what you meant about bio media filtration so I researched it .  Now I understand .  How do you know when you have enough bio-media ?  If I need extra i can use Bio-Balls Coralife for more .  I just have to order some .  Is it Bio media x gals of value .

The more media the less flow is required, that's why canisters and sumps need less flow as they contain a lot more bio media.

OK,  Its making sense now so that should take care of my problem for fertilization of ammonia .  Now for my Red devil I just can hope for the best or get a bigger tank.  Thanks that helps me allot .

IMO you should get a bigger tank. I don't think hoping for the best will do. They are extremely agressive. Lets see what others think ???
This is getting expensive! I think I\\\'m gonna need a 2nd job to support my fish habit.

RD's can be known to be pretty horrible in any size tank. Never kept them myself but Know three people who do and each one has moved their RD to it's own tank, kinda says something.
As for ammonia, sounds like you have it sorted with over filtration, but live plants are a good help.
Carbon is a chemical remover also.  :)
I am in my own little world, but it's okay, they know me here.

carbon doesnt remove ammonnia nitrite or nitrates and i use the space taken up by the carbon for more bio media but i do keep some on hand in case anything nasty gets in the tank chemichal wise
