Power outage
« on: April 06, 2010, 03:03:25 AM »
just wondering how long i have til i actually need to start doing something to thwart losing my fish. I have a 55 with an o. a jd and a pleco. a 30 with 4 dwarf guaramis, 6 zebra danios and a juvy gt. +a pleco. and a 5 with 2 rasboras and 6 neons +pleco. lights went out at least 6 hours ago, and i just got home from work. appearantly a tornado has gone through the area while i was at work. luckly we sustained no damage but concerned about our little underwater buddies. my mother has suggested replacing one of  the air  pumps  with one of her oxygen tanks. would that be a good idea? hopfully someone will see this msg and can help me soon.

I'd say most of the filters will be on their way out, if you've got a way of pumping through them to help keep some bacteria going, I'd get onto that.

As for oxygenation, I'd just keep refilling a bucket from the tank and then puring it back in.

I hope the power comes back for you soon, how's the temp doing as well?
You could put blankets / towels round the tank to help it if temp is an issue.

As Alt said, I'd be worrying about the filters not running more than anything. Too long without them running and the ammonia is going to start building up. And to make it worse, when they do come back on they would've lost bacteria, so you may end up being on water change duty for a while. Hope it comes back on soon bud!
I am in my own little world, but it's okay, they know me here.

Been 19 hours so far. according to the power company, i'm not alone as there are 6000 people in the county with no power. ok, well thanx guess all i can do at this point is wait for power and get ready for the water changes.

Sorry to hear that your having power outage.

The bacteria will be dead in the filters by now so expect to have to cycle the tank when power starts up, hope the gravel bacteria survive to kick start your tank again.
