Jewel cichlids slow growers?.
« on: March 14, 2010, 11:00:38 AM »
Hi ya guys. hope everyone is well.
I was just wondering if anyone has kept Jewels before and if they have found them slow growing. The little chap I have in with my Americans has barely grown since I first got him. He's healthy and feeds well, but the others have shot past him in size.
Also what category of Africans would he be in? As I know he's not a lake but a river species.
I am in my own little world, but it's okay, they know me here.

Yeah, that's why got the little fella. Gets on great with the others, and he's the most interesting to watch. Changes color rapidly depending on what mood he's in. can be a kind of dull pinky brown one moment then, when I feed them say, goes a rich deep red and all the neon blue spots show up vivid. Just very slow in maturing.

I have had jewels for about a year now they were about 4 cm when i first got them and now they are about 6-7 cm long. I feed them flake food as well as some frozen food and on occasions- live blackworms. This is my personal experience, i think this is the average growth rate since jewels in the LFS i do abit of work in has them growing about the same rate. What are you feeding them? What SA's is he being kept in a tank with?
Bad spellers of the world untie!

They are all fed a variety of pellets, earth worms on occasion, as well as an "in tank ready" source of guppie fry.
He's with 2x blue acaras, 1x convict, 1x Gold severum.
He doesn't get bullied by any of them. In fact, he's the only fish in there that gets no flack at all.

Yes,   Jewels are definitely, tought little buggers, whom dont take any crap off of any Cichlid.  They surely can handle themselves, if necessary.    O0

Jewels compare to other cichlids are slow growers. Just feed them a variety of foods. Variety is the best for them.
