How did I miss this post?
A bit late, but I love these fish. I have two juvi Chocs at around 5" Mars and Galaxy. tank mates; a Gold Sev, Convict, Jewel cichlid, Plec, and dithers. They were very shy for a week or so, but once they realized where their food came from are always out waiting to be fed. Temperament not unlike Oscars in that respect, although not aggressive. They eat like they've never been fed, and take everything and anything I put in. One of them is dominant over the other and will give him a bit of stick from time to time.
Started off a dark brown with white bands down their sides, now a mixture of green, orange, purple, brown. A lovely looking fish.
If kept with dithers, best to chose larger species as, contrary to belief, while young they will eat anything that will fit in their mouths. I keep Rosy barbs and Columbian Tetras and these still sometimes get a brief chase, especially when competing for food.
Another down side, all be it not a big one, is that they are awful for hurting themselves. Tank decor needs to be as free as possible of sharp or pointy edges, and still you'll come home to find that one of them has knocked a few scales off on something! Though they do heal very quickly and never seem particularly bothered.
Awesome, attractive, keeper responsive fish. If you ever get the chance again go for it, you won't be disappointed.
