« on: June 20, 2010, 07:50:48 PM »
So theres a small store in the town i live in that ive known has fish for some time but ive never checked it out. I knew they specialized in cichlids and looked it up online and they have a site!! well i looked through and they have amazing cichlids!! I dont know if many are rare but the pics all look beautiful and they are breeding over 50 species from wild/f1 fish! i cant wait to go check it out and make purchases to stock my new tank once its up

heres a link if you could check it out and give me opinions on what you guys think of the fish i now have to choose from lol, also am kinda wondering what ones are more or less common?..

Yep, Storm's right those are Africans and you should not mix with Americans. And yes they are amazing fish.
This is getting expensive! I think I\\\'m gonna need a 2nd job to support my fish habit.

You generally want to overstock Africans to spread aggression, so why not do the 55 an African tank and the 110 an O and some buddies  O0

Hmm I think ill go with africans in the large tank, many more possibilities haha  O0

Plus with the african specialized store in town I can get a lot of first hand info on care for different species and breeding tips. Also his stock is nearly all bred from wild/f1 fish so will be high quality fish  ;D plus I have an interesting tank set up in mind now  :stupid:

I'd be wary of anybody claiming wild or F1 stock but agree, Africans can be very rewarding if you get the right set-up and mix.  I love all 3 of my African tanks
Different set-ups, different personalities but each with character.

True about the wild/f1 thing but its a local family bussiness and cichlids have been a hobby of his for years so I wouldn't doubt he could get them.

I will make the 110 an african tank, I'm thining make it kinda a rocky cave filled outcrop meets open water kind of set up??

Depends what you want to keep.

If it's mainly Mbuna then rocks, rocks and more rocks

My C.Moori tank has only 4 large pieces of slate in it

The Konia tank has a mix of rocks, pebbles and plants.

I have to agree with all of the above suggestions. my 75 gal Mbuna tank has 22 fish and lots of roots and such rather than rocks, but they need some place to get away from each other.
This is getting expensive! I think I\\\'m gonna need a 2nd job to support my fish habit.

F1's and F2's are two different things. I consider F2's to really be tank-bred, since the parents are tank-bred and raised. That said, these demand seperate pricing. I think the 110 as an mbuna-tank will bring you loads of entertainment, mine does. Pack it with rocks almost half way and they will be thankful. Please put some pics up!
It's nice to have a reliable source of fish, info, breeding, and handling advice. My LFS' don't want anything to do with my fry(all F1 or F2(tankbred)) saying they are happy with their current stock...but if I needed anything ordered, they would happy to help. They don't remember me doing just that 2 years ago with some Afra's. Couldn't tell me where from, what kind, F1 or what?! That's what made me hunt down selective and not-often-seen fish for the area. Put them for sale on CL and always have repeat and word-of-mouth business. Take that, crappy fish store of mine.
people are like slinkys; not much good for anything but you still can\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t help but laugh when you push them down the stairs.
