Red Devil Questions
« on: June 26, 2010, 10:49:51 AM »
Hi, I have acquired a red devil cichlid that I have had for four months now. I have looked up just about every website on-line about them and have gotten a lot of different opinions and views on this awesome fish. Mine is about four inches. He has a good sized nuchal hump already has pointed dorsal and anal fins which makes me think it is a male. He is almost 4 inches and shares a tank with a one inch green terror a 5 inch common pleco a 2 inch bristlenose pleco and a 6 inch bichir. He doesn't seem to mind his tankmates as long as they stay away from his cave.  I was wondering how long he will allow tankmates or if they can stay permanently if they are given adequate hiding places. I was also wondering about their growth rate. If you have owned one of these fish please tell me about your experience with them. Thankyou.   :)

Here is a good article on the Red Devil

I think once he hits maturity your other fish are in trouble, most cichlids are not so bad when juvenile but show their true colours when they pass this stage.

They grow very fast and are very aggressive. You may have some trouble down the line. Some tolerate tank mates, some don't. What size tank are they in?

55 gallon for now.  Thats why I was asking because I dont know how long he will tolerate the green terror but they are fine for now.

^^ Yeppers, most likely they will not live together peacefully when they get older. A GT is no match for a RD.
