Gasping JD
« on: July 29, 2010, 04:00:41 AM »
I put my new female JD into her established 35g tank yesterday.
She has a good cave some big driftwood, sand substrate, a decent filter and a powerhead for flow.
Eating well, colours great.
I was a little concerned about water quality(smelled alittle funky) so I did a %50 water change before I put her in And another %50 late last night.
My question is She is behaving normally but appears to be gasping. Now I have never had a fish this big so maybe it's just easier to see her breathing than what I am used to. She is not at the top so I dont think it is oxygen thing

is the ph the same in both tanks ?
wonder if your getting an ammonnia reading ?
you could adjust the outflows so that they agitate the surface a bit more and see if that helps

Yep our PH here in Toronto is rock solid 7.8.
There may have been ammonia which is why I have been doing regular large WCs.
I will up the surface agitation.

She seems to be better now I think the water quality may have been the issue.

Depending on how you acclimated her it may have caused her to stress and she needed to get use to the change.  How long did you acclimate her before placing in the tank?

Would check to make sure all parameters are in check also.

This is what I was thinking, all fish react differently to a new home.
This is getting expensive! I think I\\\'m gonna need a 2nd job to support my fish habit.

It must be a JD thing  ;D  I only ended up with mine as a guest for a few months while my friend sorted out her son's tank, didn't really want her,  now you couldn't get her away from me or my partner with dynamite  :)
