oscar and a catfish?
« on: July 31, 2010, 08:41:17 PM »
Im changing to a 125 gallon tank and I am looking for tank mates for my red Oscar and my tiger oscar. I was interested in a tiger shovelnose catfish but wasn't sure how it would work out. Any advice on tank mates?
Thank you!

   Hi, and welcome.

Hmm. choosing buddies for Americans can be an arduous journey that may or may not end up working out in the end.

In general Large or armored Catfish make good tank mates for most SA/CA set ups.

How large are your O's at this time? Are they a pair?

a tiger shovelnose is to big for your tank, getting to near 4 feet long.

You could go
lima shovelnose,
clarius,
Blochii,
Ornatus

My red is about 8 inches and my tiger is about 4 inches. They seem to be a pair cause they won't leave eachothers sides.

Means nothing I'm afraid. once both get about 9" is when you'll find if they are as that is maturity

Gerry, I'm disappointed, not a Pleco to be seen on your list  ;D  What you need is a nice, spiny Pseudacanthicus to keep those Oscars in line.  I'll break out the Pleco list later once I'm home from work.

I'm preferring the Lima Shovelnose. Tempted on something like that myself one day.

All kinds of Plecos, make great choices!  O0   Also, Raphaels, Sun, Pictus and African Bumble bee Cats, all do well with them, if they are a decent size, compared to your Oscars.  I wouldnt by any at smaller sizes, however.  Plenty to choose from.  O0 ;)

I have been looking at the Lima Shovelnose since it was posted on here. Now my local store has some in. They're not very big though, maybe 3 or 4 inches. Is this too small to keep with my 10 in. and 8 in. oscars?

it would certainly be a risk at that size though mine was about bite size too when I added it.

they are fast swimmers and an O would need to be real hungry to want to chase down a 4" fish
