Oscars, in fact most cichlids like to dig.

Could also be clearing a spot for laying eggs

This is normal. All cichlids dig. I think they do it for territory. But yes, quite normal. You will clean you tank, make it all pretty and the next day you have hills and valleys.

They like to lay eggs on a smooth flat surface.  They move the gravel to try to create that.  Many people put a piece of slate in the tank and the fish lay eggs on that.

If they clear a spot and you keep putting it back they likely won't lay eggs.

Yep that`s cichlid for ya.  ;D
But darn it`s there home why fight it...let them have it the way they want it.  After all you can`t win.  O0
Put a flat rock in there and that should help some.

Yep, all Cichlids do their share of digging and rearranging the furniture, LOL.  Totally, a normal thing.  ;)

I gave up with my old Oscar in the end. If I tidied up he'd get a real grump on and instantly start putting it back to rights.
It's what made him such a character though.
I am in my own little world, but it's okay, they know me here.

As Gerry says, I think they all have different levels of intelligence.
Personally, I think O's are one of the fish that are at the top of the intelligence list but as an example of another - the tank I have with Blue Dolphins and a Venustus go beserk when they see me come into the room but just show mild interest if it's anybody else in the family, if I have visitors they will often hide but as soon as they see me again back out the come.
