75 gallon tank
« on: August 30, 2010, 10:05:01 AM »
I have a 75 gallon tank and I want an Oscar in it. I also want another fish. I want to get the 1 oscar and 2 jack dempseys and 1 pleco. I heard other people say that this can happen and they have been keeping fish for a very long time but I want to hear from you.

That would be a very crowded tank requiring daily water changes to keep the water as pristine as possible.  Most likely wind up with the two jacks ganging up on the oscar unless the oscar was significantly larger.

2 jacks and a pleco would be fine, or the oscar and a pleco.

That would be over stocked I'm afraid as you have some serious big aggressive fish that produce a lot of waste.

any 2 from the 4 you mentioned could work, 2 Jack Dempsey would be nice in there and you could maybe end up with a breeding pair.

I agree with Gerry, a pair of JD's would be great in a 75  O0  With a nice catfish and a small school of dithers, maybe one of the larger Tetra's like Serpae or Columbian....... JD's do well having a school of dithers in the tank with them, it tends to make them feel more comfortable.

An Oscar and a JD might be OK, although you can never be 100% sure with two different species in one tank.  They might get along long term or they might not.....it is hard to predict how fish will react as they mature.

What are the dimensions of your 75g tank?  Width v height v depth.  That can have an impact as well on how the fish will interact with each other, especially since JD's can be very territorial fish.

More then likley the jack will try to kill the oscar once it reaches maturity. I would do an oscar and a pleco, then you would be fully stocked.

I agree with the others.   If your set on the Oscar, than I would try a smaller cichlid with him like a Firemouth, Con, or even a bigger one, but along the less territorial range, like a Severum.    O0

I have to agree with all of the above coments. O's are great fish and very owner responsive. I have a 12inch O in a 55gal (590 gph filtration) with a 4-5 inch striped raphael and I need to do a 25gal water change weekly.
This is getting expensive! I think I\\\'m gonna need a 2nd job to support my fish habit.

Sorry but only an oscar can fit in a 75 gallon tank plus jd can be a bit to aggressive for oscars. You will have to choose, one oscar or two jack. Personally I would just go with one oscar.

I had put a sail-fin catfish & a Chinese algae eater with my oscar,  place in a 75g tank and they were good tank mates.

I had my tank for 10 yrs and just lost my oscar this past week. Bummer for me but he did survive for ten years. Was 14" and around 3 pounds.  the chinese algae eater lasted for 6 yrs and my cat fish is still going strong yet.

I need to add some more fish again but I think I will stay away from the oscar. Tired of the oscar tearing up everything in the tank. Been through many heaters until I got an inline one, don't know how many spray bars he butchered up. Actually left the torn up spry bars in the tank so he would leave the one that was running alone for a while. The only thing I could keep in the tank as decor was drift wood and he pushed them all around until I tied on some slate to them.

So if ya want an oscar think about those things. I enjoyed his antics over the years but now it is time for me to move on to some other kind of cichlids.

I hope this helps even though I am a bit late to answer this question. Just found this forum today and had to say something here.

Joe
Love my cichlid fish tank.
