Angelfish Questions
« on: September 03, 2010, 10:32:29 PM »
Hi all,

I've kept aquariums most most of my life, but I've been out of it for a few years. I've had lots of angels over the years, and really like them.

I'm considering setting up a 3x2x2 aquarium in my dining room, and world like to create an Amazon biotope with angelfish in it. That's the biggest tank I can fit in there. So here are my questions:

1) (Yes or no sort of question) From memory angels will live in schools of 6 or more. But a 3x2x2 is way too small for a school of angels, right? Or is it?

2) Has anyone had any success keeping angels in smaller groups? If so, how many, and in what ocnditions? (I have, but I'm curious about other folks experiences)

3) Do angelfish generally harass hatchet fish?

Thanks all!

I've only really kept them in nothing smaller that a 4x2x2 but my daughter had a pair in a smaller tank than you are mentioning and they ended up massive & long lived.

As for numbers, I'm not sure with that size.  I had 4 (2 pairs) in a 6ft tank and the 2 pairs were constantly at it.
I've got a single Angel in a planted 6ft tank for it's own protection and it leaves all the smaller fish alone but it does spend a lot of time hunting baby shrimps.  I've never had hatchet fish though.

Thanks for that. I can always put in say 5 or 6 and take some out if they don't go well. I hate crowding fish. Maybe just a well-matched pair would be better.

Hei and Welcome.  :)
Hm,, been awhile sense I had a setup with Angel`s, so have to go on memory.
I had 6 in a 75 gal, with hatchet fish and everything went fine, only thing was the hatchet fish jumped out when I was doing water change`s, lost them that way.  :(  Cool fish though.
Got one Angel now that live`s with my Oscar`s, he ( am going to say ) is a real pain.  ;D
like all cichlids`s some have a mean streak and other`s are down right mellow.

I think if your going to try a group; I would start them off as baby`s and let them grow out together.
Weeding out the bullies as needed.

I love your Avatar Katt!

I guess it makes sense to start off with a small group, and if I get a good matched pair or a cohesive group I'll be happy regardless! THanks!
