To feed frozen or not to feed?.?.
« on: November 15, 2010, 12:58:28 PM »
I was wondering if anyone here has any experience feeding prepared frozen foods that are sold at the lfs? Such as frozen: shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia and some others? I have never tried feeding anything that was packaged and frozen. I know if I do, I would have to thaw it in tank water before feeding. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Depends what I'm feeding whether I thaw it or not. If I want bottom feeders fed I thaw so it sinks, if not I just throw it in and they come for it as it breaks up.

Alright, good to know. Do any of you have a preference of what frozen food to feed? Either based on nutrition or how messy it is when fed to the fish?

Me too just throw it in for my O and let it thaw a litle for the raphael. I have only tried beefheart.
This is getting expensive! I think I\\\'m gonna need a 2nd job to support my fish habit.

Thanks all for the info! Before I wrote this topic post I went to my lfs where I asked the employee's what I would get for a treat for my O's and after she said feeders (I quickly replied no), she recommended beef heart. So I bought it and did not feed any, instead I wanted to ask all of you what you thought.

probably best to avoid beefheart

Heres why

Quote
IMPORTANTJust a note on beefheart and meats from warmblooded animals of what we buy in our stores. If you must and feel you want to feed beefheart or other meat, make sure they are organic.  Research is now being done that animal meat that have been injected with antibiotic's and hormones can effect your fish.  Many fish are becoming immune to antibiotics that we use to help cure common bacterial infections.  Also my research showed that when the fish are younger 2-4 inches can tolerate it well but as they get bigger the fishes digestive system slows down and has a harder time breaking up the meat and possibly causing blockages and other digestive issues.  But with that said as long as a well rounded diet, organic meat (personally I'd find other foods) is given your fish should not have any problems

Thanks Tony, when I read that I decided it was just best to just throw the package out. Even I don't like throwing away money, its better then making my fish sick! With that article also makes me wonder what issues might the food we eat have?? Just some food for thought. (pun intended) One thing I tried feeding with good success was fresh shrimp from the grocery store that was kept on ice. I cut it into chunks and soaked in tank water first and the o's loved it! Is it ok to feed things like shrimp to them?

Thanks Gerry! I'll be sure to stay away from feeding anything that breathes air.  :fish:
