Noob 55.... want cichlids..
« on: October 23, 2011, 09:35:03 AM »
Noob here...   Haven't had an aquarium in 20yrs +  but back then it was a run of the mill community tank with tetras, guppies and the like...

This time around I just walked out of the shop with a 55 gal corner tank setup, and I'd like to keep a few cichlids in it.

The dilemma... compatibility!

I'd be happy if I could keep up to 6 fish in the tank and I have these on my list:

Jewel x2 (pair maybe?)
Green Terror
Jack Dempsey
cat or 2 or something to aid in cleanup - was looking at upside down cat.

Am I nuts?

Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks

im afraid your 55 isnt big enough for that stock list  , im also wary of mixing African ( jewels ) and American cichlids , you might get away with the GT and the JD in that size of tank but again youl be a bit overstocked and will need to watch out for aggresion and water quality issues  , as for cat fish the gold spot plec may be worth considering as they only grow to 12"or so

I liked the jewel's for the colour..
Thanks for the response, I think I knew I was pushing things with both GT and JD there..
Ok list is narrowing down..

substituting a single convict for the jewel pair
a GT or JD (likely will go with the JD)
one other smallish cichlid (6-8" max full grown).. ideas?  firemouth, acara, t-bar any others?
pleco/cat or both for clean up

we ran into the monster pleco in our tanks of old, hopefully i can find some decent choices locally without having to get a common that gets a foot long..

On the subject of pleco's and cats how do the cichlids get along with those fish?  will a full grown JD for example feast on oto cats?

Corner units can have volume but tend to be poor for American cichlids due to space (length wise) for territories.

Jewels like the same water as Americans and don't get to big so if your set on them I would go with them and maybe a similar sized Cichlid (con maybe).  If your wanting something bigger like a JD then I would have that as an only cichlid with some dither fish.

You could chance a single jewel and JD and hope that they get on, this will be down to individual fish temperament.

Welcome to the site and the world of cichlid ownership, which can be fun but challenging  ;D

instead of a convict you could try a female salvin ?
gets to about 6" but a bit more colour

Actually I am doing more and more reading..   I've been on this forum all afternoon...

I think I may look at a convict, jewel (still love the colour) and yes a salvini (or fm)

with mebbe some danios and a cat or pleco

Due to the triangle tank (which arrives tomorrow) i am still planning how I will go about creating cover in the 3 corners without leaving one corner completely hidden from the front.  heh so far all I have is gravel and a big piece of driftwood...
It will be a week of rock collecting and designing.

Welcome aboard  :)

Convict, FM, Salvini, Jewel and Acara are all good size of cichlid of to suit the tank. GT and JD would bit a bit large as said. Jewels lean more toward living with American cichlids in terms of water suitability and diet as they are a River species and not found directly in the Rift Lakes amongst the others. Their behavior differs a bit from American cichlids but on the most part they will usually get along ok. Best to avoid all other African species though unless you plan to have a completely African tank, the Jewel is kind of an exception to the rule.

Large cichlids can sometimes eat small plecos but they are not particularly inviting to eat as they have spines and are tough. Usually if the fish grow up around plecos they just know/learn to leave them alone.

You could maybe build up the back corner and walls of the tank with terracotta flower pots to create caves and leave front area as clearer space, I've seen a lot of corner African cichlid tanks set up like that and it looks/works pretty good.

Ok, it turns out this tank is closer to 46gal than 55, now it came with a fluval 205 which appears to be rated at up to 40 gal.  The lfs said well its a fluval package deal (aquarium heater, filter stand etc) so it will work due to the tank not being long.  Not sure I buy that.  Before I get the tank cycling, I am thinking of swapping out the filter for a 405 which offers a substantial increase in filtration.  To my questions...   Is there such a thing as too much filtration/flow?  What do you think of this idea?

At least it looks like you can adjust the flow on the fluvals if its too much.

I've only been at this 4 days.. and I thought this might be a cheap form of relaxation therapy  ::)

can't have to much filtration and it takes a fair bit of flow before the fish get upset.

Setting up is the costly part, but I wouldn't say it was a cheap hobby either. But very rewarding when its all settled and going well

thats exactly the corner tank i have and im running a fluval 405 in it , the 205 is ok for a comunity set up but is seriously challenged with cichlids and will clog up quickly
