need help with identification
« on: November 16, 2011, 06:58:09 PM »
Can anyone help me to identify a couple of my African cichlids?
« Last Edit: November 16, 2011, 09:11:52 PM by Heater »
My tank seems to be one of the few I've heard of to successfully mix African and South Americans. Three varieties of South Americans, and twelve varieties of African. I also have eight Tiger barbs, two Rosy barbs, three different types of catfish, two Yoyo loaches, a Chinese hifen shark, and a Chinese plotco. Loving every minute of it

Sorry I never kept Africans but am sure Brad, Alt or Tracey may be able to help you when they come on

Not a problem. Nice tank. Here's mine. What kind of fish do you have?

Welcome to WC Heater, tank looks great  O0.

I'll be honest and say I'm only taking a stab at them and could be way wrong but first one possibly a Greshakei without a lot of colour, and second being some type of Melanochromis  (like auratus / maingano / interruptus).

When I bought the second one, he was sold as a johanni.  The first one I bought just because I liked the way he looked. One website I went to said he was just his plain blue color because he is in with more aggressive fish, and that he will change to a brighter blue and black during breeding, but I forgot what the name of the species was.

That's the problem with Africans. So many of them look so similar
This is getting expensive! I think I\\\'m gonna need a 2nd job to support my fish habit.

The first one looks like a blue acara to me but totally clueless with the second one. I have been searching through the cichlids reference book but can't seem to find a perfect match.

Hi, when I had a quick look, first jumped out as Metriaclima callainos and the second as a Johanni.  With the first it is possible that it could be a number of differnt Zebra connotations but it'll be interesting to see how they grow.
