Do Pictus cats get along with featherfin's?
« on: February 02, 2012, 06:10:24 PM »
I have a 55 gallon with one 5.5" Female Green Terror, 5 BA Tetras and 3 pictus cats. I found a 4-4.5" featherfin squeaker (Synodontis euptera) at the LFS that I really want. Although I was going to try to keep an all SA tank, this catfish might change my mind of that plan.
Will the two species of catfish coexist in that tank, or is it a hit or miss thing? From what I have heard, the water parameters of the two two species shouldnt be an issue.
I have others recommending pleco L numbers, but I just don't have the same feeling as I do the synodontis's. I have 5 lucipinnis in my Blue Acara tank, and I love em.

Thanks in advance

The cats shouldn't be an issue together but I think you need to be careful with the amount of fish your adding.

not sure I think the featherfins are African cats. If so the water parameters would be different. I've had a featherfin in my Mbuna tank for about 5 years.
This is getting expensive! I think I\\\'m gonna need a 2nd job to support my fish habit.

Featherfins are definintely water chemistry compatible (Not a Rift Lake Synodontis, but can adapt) and being territorial once it finds its spot the Pictus will steer clear. If the Pictus already have good favorable hides the Featherfin wants, they may get displaced by force.
With Gerry...might be pushing the stocking...getting about 8".

Well, lets take a step back. How about moving the Pictus cats out, so I basically have the one GT and one Featherfin. I understand, both get to about 9" fully grown, is that a bio load problem in that size tank, or more of a territorial problem in that size tank? The pictus cats are active, but I can take em or leave em if it comes down to a problem with the tank mates.

Thanks

Not so much with good filtration.
As far as Featherfin "aggression" it's really only territorialism and usually with other bottom-dwellers that compete for its type of hiding areas.Like any fish, you get some softies...you get some thugs.
As with all larger fish, especially more than one, there'll come a time when you look at the tank (55g) and think it looks tight. When that happens it usually means it is...upgrade time.

Well, the featherfin was sold today, so it comes down to the old saying, "You snooze, you lose"
I did see a 4" striped raphael catfish today at the LFS for $20.00. Seems a little high, I don't know, but I am thinking of getting that to keep to my SA theme tank.
I just hope I see him before my Cubs Win the World Series. Maybe not...
Thanks on the before advice.
