Oscars:they get big, need lots of room,aggressive to fish,esily killed by other fish,and are messy.


Severums should get the spotlight that oscars get.
Severums have a personality that u wouldnt believe,
one time my male severum ran up to me for food.I didnt give him none so he got made and turned black with green stripes, and flared at me.You can put alot in a
single tank and them grow large(max size is 8in. long and 7 in. deep)I have a friend who has 8 in a 75 gallon tank with tank mates.Severums are not aggressive and are very passive and active.They also are easy to breed,
almost as easy as convicts.The whole pack of severums
will protect the fry no letting any fish come near the fry.
While still not killing the other fish in the tank.Severums
also can hold there own due to there size.All in all I think these fish are the KING CICHLID AND I SAY THEY ARE BETTER THAN OSCARS

Um sorry to be the barer of bad news but a severum is going to need virtually the same size tank as an oscar and I guarantee that 8 in a 75 is grossly over stocked... it is scarry what some people think is ok.  I would still say 3-4 sevrums is max in a 75, and if you want to over stock the tank 5-6 would be pushing it.  I dont know where you get your information from or who you talk to but oyu might think about ignoring them from now on.  A severum might be able to be happier in a smaller tank then an oscar ie 12" wide or less, since they dont get up to or over 12" they could still turn around comfortably in that size tank.

Also ease of breeding isnt always a bonus... you have to have room and tanks setup for the fry and even more room to thin them out as they get larger... breeding really isnt for everyone, even though we all really would like to do it, you have to be realistic about your ability to care for the fry.

And as far as Severums being the best, or even better then Oscars... everyone has their favorites.  And every individual fish has its own personality so it is impossible to say one is better then the other.  There are some on this site who love Jaguars, some who love red devils, convicts etc etc etc... everyone is entitled to their opinion.

In addition to what Adam said, severums are peaceful when they are young, but as they mature, pair off and begin to prepare a spawning site, they become just as aggressive as other cichlids.  They will drive away other fish fiercely and bloody fights can occur.  If a pair is given its own tank, then spawning should be successful and they seldom eat their eggs or fry.  I happen to agree that severums are wonderful fish.  I have 1 adult and 5 babies--2 turquoise and 3 albino (gold).  But I love my oscars too, and my arrowanas.  In fact I think all my fish are special in their own way, and I really don't think any one is better than the other.

Ok, Ok , dont bite my head off.Yall said u can put 4 or 5 in a 75 tank, eeevvveeennnn 5 to 6 pushing it.But tell me this, can a oscar  do that.U are wrong, severums do not get as aggressive as other fish while spawning, especially with there own species.There was once 3 large 10 inch gold severums in a 20, yes i said 20, gallon tank at Petsmart.The fish did well until bought and laid eggs.I got 2 of the fry in my tank now.I will have good filtration to, very good. Upon asing another
question would a 100 gallon tank be better.

OK, i love severums, i had a breeding pair of turqouise severums, male was 10" and female was 8", now your actually trying to tell us that 3 10" severums were doing fine in a 20gal, AS EASY TO BREED AS CONVICTS? i beg to differ, they are not easy to breed(not nearly as hard as oscars), it took me forever to get mine just to lay eggs let alone have them hatch.how can you be so ignorant, and to come in and just start off by saying they are better than some other fish, why would you do that. is there any logical reason to that? oh and on your first post you said they get 8" max, then on your last post you said you say 3 10" ones, please get your stuff strait and don't come in and start trouble. and just to be nice, yes a 100 gal would be good, but you didn't mention how many are going in it. if you are just putting in 2 then yes that is alot of room for them and will do very well. i don't want to be rude, but i have delt with alot of assholes latly and don't have the patietns to do it here too. i'm sorry if i have offended anybody or caused any grief.  :-[

I'm new to this site and first I'd like to say to the administrators that your doing a great job! Second I have to laugh when people say that they kept a huge fish in a small tank and it was just fine. Ok maybe the fish didn't die, but do you really think a fish that can't even turn around in it's own tank is going to be happy?
