sick about dyed parrots
« on: April 15, 2002, 01:23:08 AM »
i went ot the pet store the other day and say these 3 parrotfish that were kinda grayish blue... they are called BLOOD parots for a reason and are they always blood red? or when they are young do they have a bluish gray color.... or were they dyed!! :o :o i think that is the meanest thing... plus i have seen a tank online with the whole rainbow of colors... why do they pick on that one fish mainly... is it becasue its a hybrid fish so nobody knows all the true colors?? also what are all the NATUAL colors they come in with being dyed???

I know where your coming from.  The "dying process", on fish seems to be spreading.  Glass fish, blood parrots, aven Oscars are being made to suffer through this process.  At my lfs they have purple and blue blood parrots :(

Whats really sad is how sick the process makes them!  I was able to see some glass fish the day after they were died.  Within 3 days after they were swimming cotton balls (thats not an exaggeration).  The guy said it clears up in a couple weeks and the fungal infection always occurs after dying them.

Could it be because the whole process is sick and wrong?  DUH! >:(

I hear you Ross49, I feel the same way... I dont mean this in a bad way to anyone here but... as long as women and children are active hobbyists there will be dyed fish.  I dont suggest that men are not guilty of buying them but if you stand next to those tanks inveriably you will hear more women and children say how cool, or cute they look.  Even my friend was thinking about getting some before I told her how tortured they were, and even still she thinks they look cool that way.  It is too bad that fish are so often seen as disposible pets, because they are usually cheap, and many uneducated keepers think it is normal for a fish to only live a few months.

Until we educate the masses this will continue and only get worse.

Yes parrots are always pink to orange... they follow the color scheme of the red devil's they are decended from.... anycolor that isnt a variation of RD coloration is a dyed fish.  They can get quite bright orange though so those are not dyed even though they may look it.

Blueish ones are probably dyed though. Adam parrots can also be green if they where breed with a green sevrum instead of a gold, I'm sure its not dyed green because it is very natural, almost exactly the same as the sevrums.

Andy I suppose that is very possible... the only green ones I have seen at my LFS's are the "Jelly Bean Parrots" that are green, yellow, purple, red, etc etc... I cant say that I have ever seen a natural green but, I believe you that they exist(those fish are such abominations I would almost believe they managed a floecent green variety  :P ).

I had 2 parrots - one was a purplish/brown and the other one orange/red.  I bought them before I read about how they get the different colors.  The guy in the pet store just said they were hybrids, not dyed.  The purplish one died after a couple of months.  The orange one is growing and appears to be doing well.  I'm not sure it was dyed because the color really hasn't faded like the other one did.  I saw one the same color as mine in the same store that had the peacock bass and it was the size of my oscar - about 12-13 inches.  What do they cross breed with the red devils to get the parrots?
