From what I read on the net They recently changed it. I will double check and make sure though. Someone is always changing and reclassifying fish so their names change.

According to adelaidaquariums.com.au it is Hypselecara Coryphaneoides, formerly hypselecara cichlasoma. The first sentence in the FOTM is wrong. It says it is formerly known H. coryphaneoides. If you can change that to "fromerly known as H. cichlasoma" Tony, I would appreciate it. Thanks

BAH! There are so many fish labled as "Chocolate Cichlid"! I don't like it. I guess I can deal with Hypselecara coryphaenoides and Hypselacara temporalis both being labled as chocolates, seeing as they both have the same genus.

Nice pic, alot of incorrect info though. The scientific name is incorrect. That genus name has not been used to describe that species for about 10 years or more. They perfer very soft clean water with a PH range of 6.5 to 7.0 tops.
The term carinvore is used to describe flesh eating mammals or mammals that consume other mammals. The Hypselecara Temporalis will not jump out of the water and attack a cow or what have you. Nore are they Piscivores. Like 90% of the South American Cichlids they are Omnivorous feeders.
Feeding a fish Beef hart is also not a recommend practice. Not only is beef hart not no their diet what so ever in the wild but alot of fish have problems digesting it. The enzymes in beef heart is not only fatting and not heathly but can actually cause major problems with some species digestive track. Why LFS sell it is beyond me.
About the only SA cichlids that are not Omnivores are peacock bass and some of the pikes. The source for that info is incorrect and out dated.

You would have to be ludicrous to assume I meant they jump out of the water and attack large or even small mammals. It has been reported that these fish have been seen jumping out of the water to catch insects. Please don't assume I mean jump ten or twelve feet out of the water either.
Carnivore, if taken loosely, means meat eater, not mammal that eats the flesh of other mammals.
The scientific name was difficult to determine. I found three or four different names. The best I could do was use the most current source of information I could find.

I was actually being facetious linking the beef hart recommendation with the carinvorous comment. The bottom line is No fish is carnivorous loosely or other wise. Look it up preferably in a scienctific dictionary. People spread poor info around like peanut butter. Then people in the field like myself who have a master degree on the subject have to re-educate and/or fight with everyone we talk to because you, Aquarium fish magazine and others have used terms to describe fish that do not apply.  I have kept and bred every SA/CA cichlid there is in the last 16+ years. All I am saying is if you don't know something look into it further before spreading it around.
I was hard on you and I am sorry. It just some things hobbyest do/say make life hard on people who know and try to help.

I do have to disagree on one point. Animal organs contain negligible amounts to no fat. They are high in protein though which is hard for some fish to digest.

Ive never had any problems with beefheart. My collection that have been fed it are oscars, red devils, jaguars, dovii, green terrors, convicts and they all have thrived on it.
Mind you though I never buy the crap they sell at the lfs. The stuff I buy is sold for human consumption and I always trim away the slight layer of fat before I process it in the blender with the rest of the ingrediants.

Theresa I will look into editing the page for you once my head clears.. My son Robert has been diagnised with epilepsy and Ive been battling the flu. So its been a shite of a week LOL.
