Why are plecos so damn expensive or is it just cause i live in australia??
i mean its insane really to sell a 8" fish for $200

or is it not? lol are they rare or something? thats more valuable than gold

Dunno if it is due to your import restrictions or transport costs or hardness to breed or all of that ???

They're not cheap here either, depending on the species, but nothing compared to your prices. Some are widely bred here, but many still have to be imported from South America or maybe from Asian breeders which raises the price.
Some of the most wanted here I think are zebra plec*s (only few breeders here so far) and Panaque suttonorum which are quite rare and therefore expensive.

I just bought an 8" monster pleco(common) from the lfs for $11.99US I guess we are lucky.....sorry

Yes in the U.S. plecos are really cheap. I can get a 2" pleco for about $2.00. The rarer plecos are more expensive. I saw one of those " gold nugget" plecos for $19.99 about 3" long.

We sell 8" plecos at work for US$14.98.... they are anything but rare... it has to do with how OZ imports them and the taxes levied on them I believe .  I seem to recall Tony saying something like that.

they r prety cheep here also
but the only pleco u get over here is the common
ive never seen any other type!!!!!!
its sad we have no plecos  >:(

Its a very long story but to condense it down.
Imported fish have to both quarantined for 2 weeks in the country of origin by a australian approved facility and when they get here they are once again quarantined for a further 2 weeks. The quarantine facility has to sterilize the holding water, only  one species per tank and if a fish can not be 100% IDENTIFIED as a allowable import it is destroyed.

All this adds up and makes imported fish rediculas in price.

Basicly our import laws suck totally.

i so want a nice big pleco for my oscar tank but ill never aford one being a student and all  :'(

if i find a real small one thats cheaper do u think my 8inch oscar would try eat him?

I introduced a 3" pleco into my tank that has an 8 tiger in it and he checked it out but didn't mess with it because of its tough skin.....
