I currently have giant danio's for dither fish with a JD and a Salvini.  I will say this, the danio's seem plenty fast enough to stay out of harms way.  I don't know yet whether i'm sold on how much help they are.  The JD in my tank guards his territory but only chases the salvini out, he ignores the danio's.  I have no aggression problems though.  whether that's due to the personality of the fish or the dither fish, i don't know.  I have four in my tank and they seem to like to swim together.  Just for looks i'd get at 5 or six in a 90 gallon.  They do dart around quite a bit and add some movement to the tank.

Thanks.  I got 5 the  other day and they don't seem to  be able to catch them other than the 1 incident.  The one Danio got smashed in the corner, believe it or not, by the Sev, of all fish. They all seem to do good though. The Danios are kinda cool. They are constantly movihg.  Thanks!

That is surprising the sev got it.  And realize they are there to preserve the cichlids by allowing them to take their aggression so to speak out on something else besides the other cicdhlids.  You may lose one every now and then but that's better than losing one of the big cichlids.  I also had buenos aires tetras but they apparently weren't fast enough.

The Oscar is really the only one who chases them now. The Dempsey and the others ignore them. I do realize, eventually they wil be Oscar food, if he ever catches them.  Thanks

In my experience oscars do tend to enjoy live food more.  I've had O's, GT's, JD's, RD's, and a salvini and the oscar was definitely the one enjoyed the chase more.  You may lose some of the dithers.  I think that is what most people expect.  Good luck.

I think the dither fishes make good tank mates for 1 gives food to your cichlids and a bit of adventure for them cause it gives them something to try to get it keeps them from being bored they also help shy fishes eat a little less fearfully i think you should get 10 in a 90 gallon tank 5 is just too small they wont go fast maybe 1 per week will die thats good cause it gives your oscar something to do i personaly think dithers are good ideas but you definitely need more than 10 well good luck

Dithers are generally fish that distract cichlids' aggression from each other.  Some think it helps a lot, others don't.

I'm starting to see both sides of the equation on this. My Sev, Jewel, Oscar and Firemouth have calmed down considerably, with the fights. However, the JD is now taking over and is still as or even more aggresive, since I added the Danios. He is now the King.He ignores the Danios, but goes after evrything else. Even the Oscar is afraid of him, whom is 2 in bigger than him. So i guess with dithers, it all depends on the fish itself. Thanks for all the help from everyone. (hopefully, my JD  doesn't kill everything, he's getting really aggressive)

Keep an eye on the JD for sure.  Even if your O is 2'' larger, the JD has the advantage.  Do you have a plan for if your JD does start killing other fish?

Yes, if the JD  becomes to aggressive,  I'll trade him in for maybe a smaller one . The Jd is one of my fav. fish, other than the Oscar, so I wanna keep trying to find one that is more docile to keep. If not any suggestions, on what to add?

JDs tend to be fiesty- I am not sure getting new smaller one would help.  (once sufficiently large you would likely have the same problems again)
I am in love with my A. Heckelii (threadfin acara)  She is very friendly (says hello to me every time I walk by the tank) and also relatively docile.  She is a moderately picky eater (will NOT eat any variety of worm but loves beefheart recipe, brine shrimp, and cichlid flakes) and will grow to about 8''.  You would want to get one who was at least as large as your other fish are now.
Not sure how well one would do with a jewel though (that is another fish in your tank you are going to need to keep an eye on)
