I'll keep that in mind when or if I get another fish. It's strange how all these fish have entirely different tempermants though.  My buddy has a GT  and JD in with an Oscar, Salvani, and Convict, and they are all around the same sizes as mine and for some reason, both the GT and JD are docile and the Oscar pushes them all around instead. So thats what I'm hoping for.  I have always wanted a GT, but, I've tried 2 so far and they are way too mean, so I haven't had any luck, so I gave up on that fish, but I do like them.   Thanks for your suggestions and help.

I totally agree with you, it is a gamble everytime you put fish together.  As far as GTs and Os, I was able to get it to work alright for a bit, but when introduced them the  GT was 4'' when the O was 9'' and they had 90 gallons between the two of them.
GTs are great! Tons of personality and gorgeous fish.  Definitly my second favorite after Os.

The only problem I have with dithers is when they get used to eating other fish some of them REALLY REALLY REALLY GET TO LOVE IT.

My Oscar finally caught 2 of the dithers.  I woke up on day and saw the tail of one of the Giant danios in his mouth, as he was swallowing it. He ate a rainbow dither earlier in the week. I'm just amazed he caught the danio. They are extremely fast!

never underestimate an oscars ability to do just about anything when food is involved.   :D  Sounds like he is pretty happy with his new tank mates.

The way I understand it is a "Dither" fish helps shy fish come out of hiding (they see these fish swiming around so they feel safe) a "Target" fish is used to displace aggression between others. I have 5 giant danios in a 55 with a 6" firemouth plus 3 smaller ones, 3 Severums (biggest 4 1/2") a female Convict (3 1/2") along with 5 Corys, 4 Botia Striata, 3 Synodontis Cats and 2 Rubberheads and I haven't lost any. IMO, your JD will beat up your Oscar etal. so to keep your comunity tank you will have to move him someday. Take care

My JD is very docile. She gets chased around by the Oscar and she isn't really aggressive at al.  The Jewel , Sev and Firemouth fight back sometimes with the Oscar, more than theJD does, but I do realize, this is a rare thing. I guess it's just that females aren't as aggressive? I used to have a male and it was mean as hell to the others, so I gave it away, but this female is pretty much a wimp right now.

IME females are not as aggresive as males, but as others have said it does depend on the fish. Best of luck in the future.

Thanks, I appreciate it.  I assumed it was the Oscar slowly picking them all off, but the other day, my (self-named)  Docile Female Dempsey, picked off one the other day.  I guess she's not as wimpy as I though. She's starting to chase the Sev and Firemouth, but is afraid of the Oscar. It's funny, the Jewel is the smallest fish, and yet, none of them wanna mess with him.

Sry for your loss.. I know its hard to get rid of (if you only have 1 tank) a fish. I had to trade in my Jaguar and Red Devils cause I wanted to have a community cichlid tank (my daughter still tells me she misses them). IMO if your tank is big enough (110-120) your other fish will be fine together except for the JD. Not sure what i'm tryin to tell you lol, but your Jewel will be next on your JD list. I just reread the post and I hope you do have a plan for the JD as domica suggested because I dont think it will matter what dithers/target fish you use she will beat up all the others. JD's are a notch up on the agressive scale as opposed to the Oscar, Firemouth and Severums. Just my opinion but I am male so..... lol    take care

Thanks Patriots!  Everything is cool though,  I haven't lost anything other than some dithers.  I think I'll be ok with my Dempsey. I might be one of the lucky ones, that can keep her, because she really isn't too aggressive.  As long as the Oscar, stays the boss. The Jewel is actually the biggest trouble maker. He messes with all of them. but i like him, lots of personality.
