What would you put in there?

I'm agonizing over the stocking of a 5x2x2 aquarium.  What would you all put in there?
I never met a fish I didn't like (or want to buy)

A couple of large cichlids and a couple smaller ones.  What do you like?

I like peaceful cichlids, but I like green terrors too!  Argh!  LOL

I posted before, last week, and listed what one option was- a peaceful combo of central americans.  If I put in a green terror, who else could I have, without unbridled violence?  I live in the middle of nowhere, and it's a LONG drive to the LFS to replace fatalities.  (Nearest REALLY good LFS- 3.5 hours)

Well realize that with any advice there is always the chance you'll get some mean cichlids.  GT's, JD's and Oscars can all be relatively  (yes i am saying relatively) peaceful or killing machines.  A true peaceful or true killer in a cichlid is an extreme and yours are likely to be somewhere between there (unless you get a RD then it is probably a killing machine  ;D)  In a 120 you should have room for possibly 3 larger cichlids like a GT, JD, O, or Texas and possibly one smaller one like a convict, salvini, blue acara, or firemouth.  There are other options out there but these are probably the most well known and most likely to be found at a lfs.  If i had a 120 gallon I would go with 2 of the larger and 2-3 smaller cichlids and then a pleco (some rare variety but that is just me) and a catfish of some sort.  GT's and JD's and blue acaras have roughly the same coloration with blue's and greens so i would only probably get one of those.  You like GT's so get one of those and then I would go with an oscar (Red Tiger is my personal favorite) and probably a salvini and a I'd probably still go with a blue acara only because I like it's coloring better than a FM or convict.  If i got three small cichlids i would get a FM then.  Like i said i would only go with two of the larger ones and then get 2-3 smaller ones but it's up to you.  Hopefully there are other ideas out there for you.  In the end you should get fish you like that are compatable.  Any of the ones named above are compatable so which do you like or are there others?

Thank you so much!  That's what I wanted to know! :)

Maybe a green terror, a texas, a geophagus surinamesis, firemouth and convict!  I'd KILL for a fancy pleco (my favorite fish), but they are so amazingly expensive in Oz- my wife would gut my like a fish (a food fish that is) if I can home with that black adonis I so dream of!  :P

Red terrors are really magnificent fish.  I'm very partial to managuenese too, and midas cichlids.  I guess like so many I do have a soft spot for the baddies!

I saw a dovii for sale yesterday in Melbourne- what a beauty!

I too have a soft spot for Jags ;D. There's nothing like watching a full grown Jag chew the life out of a 4" feeder fish. 8)

LOL Red- you have no respect for life!

In a tank with agro fish in it like say green terrors and jacks, do they still fight all the time, even if given enough room?

From what I've noticed if you give them sufficient room, they'll set up their own territories and stay out of each others way. One time I had a Mayan and a Jag lock up because I moved a rock that the Jag claimed as his own too far over to the Mayan's side of the tank. If you have two fish constantly going at it, to the point where they're being injured; I wouldn't house them together.  8)

if it was me i'd go with small fish rather then one or two large tank busters, more variety, cheaper, you can house more, less aggression factor on the most part, constantly active (one large fish is sluggish = no activity)(one small fish sluggish you can watch the others), more interesting interaction with more fish, social habits etc. territories and social hierarchy, easier to deal with if one needs to be seperated for recovery etc., easier to deal with loss if you lose a small fish to disease than a large one (and easier and cheaper to replace)and so on.

I think a 'duty of care' is more important then warranties. You should do all your homework before you purchase a fish coz you like it.
