Pleco shoots to surface
« on: July 30, 2004, 12:36:01 PM »

                Hi Guys

I have a 6 month old Pleco, and I was just wondering if anyone knows why he shoots to the surface                                                               every once and a while. Looks like hes taking in air. Not really important  just wondering.

A lot of species of pleco's do that.  You're right, he is taking a gulp of air.  Pleco's are one of the few species of fish that can breath atmospheric air.  Totally normal, so you're right not to worry about it  ;D

Yeah, really cute  :P....... my 21" pleco heads up to the surface for a gulp of air, then flattens himself out and drops back to the bottom on the tank like a stone, squashing anything that happen to be in his way, plants, rocks, other fish......  ;D

21" is only a medium sized one.  I have seen them up to about 30-36" roughly... its hard to measure them at that size lol.  But it wouldnt be able to fit stretched out in width of the 180 gallon it was in

LOL thanks Caryl, now if only women my age thought so huh ;)  Oh well got a few more years before i have to worry about that.... 6 to be exact.

Not sure what the record is, but I think I have heard stories of them getting up to 4' long.  Not sure what the accuracy of that is though.

Biggest i've heard of it 3' but i've never seen one quite that big.  30" yes but 36" no.  Any common pleco can get that big and some of the others as well.  I thought i heard someone on this forum say they saw a 3' sailfin pleco and was going to take a picture but i haven't seen that yet.

LOL,  My Pleco and Pictus Cat also do that.  I think mostly al Catfish and Pleco do that if I'm not mistaken. It is kind of cool.  My Irredes. Shark  does it sometimes too!

alot of catfish have air lungs. some cats can 'walk' out of water to find bigger ponds.....mine do it all the time, one after the other.
