Let me introduce myself
« on: August 10, 2004, 03:54:06 PM »
Hi.  Just wanted to introduce myself.  We are planning on getting an Oscar in a month or so (when the tank is all set up, cycled, and ready).  We are trying to learn as much about them and the care they need before we bring one home.   So far we have a 55 gallon for him (her?) but still have a lot of work to do.  Currently we have fancy goldfish in the 55.  Once we get the 45 set up, we plan to transfer the goldies to the 45 and then set the 55 up for the Oscar.

We had goldies about 15 years ago when we were stationed in Charleston, SC.  When we moved to North Idaho 13 years ago, we set up a 55 gallon with 2 Jack Dempseys.   Several months ago I decided to give them a treat  ::)  so I bought them some feeders.  They didn't have a clue what to do with them :o (They had never had them before.)  Anyway the feeders were ill and all died within a day, then the Dempseys got sick and died within a several days... :'(

Sorry I have rambled on so long!  I'll go away now. ;D

Ummm. Hello. Sounds like a good play for the Oscar. Just make sure you aren't feeding any feeder goldfish to your Oscar- they carry diseases :) Any way, welcome to WC.

No, I don't plan to use feeders ever again.  The one time I did turned out disasterous. :'(

Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome  :D  Sounds like you are off to a good start.  What kind of filtration do you have for it?

Have you checked out the Oscar FAQ on the homepage to this site?  It should answer a lot of the temperature, feeding, etc. type questions.

Though certainly, if you have any other questions we are all more than happy to share whatever we know.   ;D

:) I think I have read every article and post on this site!  I found the FAQ section to be VERY helpful.  Actually my lfs lady told me about your site and told me to come here for all the info.  She said this is the best site and SHE IS RIGHT! I've been lurking for a while, just soaking up the knowledge. ;)

At the moment we have (2) Aquaclear 200 filters, UGF set to (2) 601 Powerheads.  However, we plan to convert to Filstar XP3 and an Aquaclear 500 in the future.  From what I understand Oscars can be quite messy and need plenty of filtration.  Eventually we hope to convert the 45 with the goldfish to a Filstar and Aquaclear too.

Welcomt to WC  ;D  Sounds like you've been enjoying yourself here so far.
As far as the filtration goes, the general rule of thumb for oscars is to have the filter turning the water over 10x an hour, give or take.  And you're right, they're very messy fish  ::)  You might need to rething the UGF, once they reach maturity, oscars are full on diggers and you'll probably end up with exposed plates in fairly short order.
Apart from that, like Domica said, any questions, just ask away, we're here to help!!  :)

Tracey, we plan to get rid of the UGF when we get ready for the Oscar.

Welcome!  It's great to hear from someone doing research BEFORE they buy the oscar!  It sounds like you're well on your way to happy oscar ownership.  I've got the same filter combination on my 75 gal, so I'm sure you're be fine with yours. The early research will save you money and heartache.
