How long does it take for a Tail fin to grow back?
« on: August 19, 2004, 01:42:43 AM »
My empire gudgeon male has had his tail fin nipped and I wondered how long it may take to re-grow ?
Any ideas? :o

I have had quite a few tail fins nipped off. Never really counted the days, but it seemed like a week or two with plenty of salt, and maybe a hospital tank if you have one.

My daughters beta was torn up rather badly once & my G.T. had half it's face ripped off one time also...these along with a couple other things have left me with the belief that most major injuries that will heal, will do so in about 2 - 4 weeks. I'll spare you the recomendations for treatment.  lol  ;D   ><:   :D:
Too small,or not too small;that is the question.

i think it depends on the fish and how much of the tail is missing. i've seen some heal in a few days and others take months. i had one con that lost allmost all its tail and it never seemed to grow back even over two years  :-\

I agree with fnesr 100%,thats why I said "most" major injuries. Some just never fully heal up or heal up so slowly it's hard to see the improvement. I'm sure some species heal faster than others,I have never had a gudeon myself...has it ever been injured before? One thing I noticed; my pacu heal up from scrapes/missing scales faster than my Oscar. Maybe thats a general indicator of their healing abilities...just a thought.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to check the tank thoroughly this morning, its a planted tank and sometimes they hide abit.
But I think he may be MIA. :-X

Water quality could play a big part in the healing process I would have to think. The higher the nitrate levels the longer it could take to heal. I am assuming this only. It seems to make logical sense anyway.
