OMG! Con eggs! I've just got the pair on Friday.
« on: August 23, 2004, 04:46:09 AM »
I can't believe it, I'm so excited!! I just got my cons Friday evening. The female already had orange and green breeding markings on her. I don't think the pair I had were already a pair, there were a few in the tank at the lfs and they move some damn fast I just told the guy a male and female would do, the way they were swimming around you couldn't tell which were pairs after he stuck the net in..lol they went nuts.

I had a feeling they might, they barely leave each others side, they have a deep pit dug behind this nice shiny white rock and it has plants on the other side too. That's where the eggs are is on the side of the rock where the pit is. There is a flower pot on it's side with no bottom in the other corner which they sometimes go into, I'm suprised they didn't lay the eggs there.

Not that many eggs though, unless they have them moved around. I hope they hatch! I got this big stupid grin on my face as if I was the expant momma and not her...lol   :D: :D:

I will definately have to be getting that bigger tank, sooner than I thought if all goes well.

I still have to think of names for them...It will need some thought, she is the braver of the two, he's a bit shy. Anyways this post is long enough..ha ha...but I just can't help myself, I'm SO excited!!!

Edit: Spelling Error..was just too excited..lol

Congrats.  You must have gotten a pair that was getting ready to breed at the lfs.  Hang on to your shorts because they just keep on doing this.  Convicts can get very randy baby. >:D (use an austin powers accent when reading the last line)

I know, I knew they were like rabbits but wow. It looks like I have lots of reading to do to take care of the fry (crosses fingers) when they hatch. I'm got another browser open and am looking info up, plus I'm going to search through some older posts on here.

I can't wait. Have to start saving my pennies for that bigger tank. I just can't help myself...I'm so excited, this is my first fry.

Yep,
That's one of the reasons I love my cons so much. If my other fish don't do anything I can always count on them for a little entertainment.
Congrats on the fry. I remember my first batch and I was so exited. I couldn't have been happier.
Keep us posted on how it goes

Cons are fun to breed. If you have any other fish in the tank, youd better take them out right now, because cons are agressive when it comes to fries.

congrats on the cons. you shouldn't need to do too much at all really until the fry are free swimming. if you get that larger tank you'll have the tank your using for them now to house the fry when the time comes to seperate them  :)  good luck with them and let us know how it goes.

Thanks. At what size should I separate them? When I get the bigger tank I think I might keep another pair of them and see if my lfs will take the rest, or not... lol I'll see if my son would like a pair. He hasn't seen my cons yet, he's up north with my parents till school starts. I got the cons after he was gone, he might want some too, they're just so likable.

Anyways, we'll see how it goes.  :D:

i usually leave them with the parents (or at least one parent, ussually the fem) for as long as possible, usually until the parents are ready to spawn again (at this stage the parents will veiw them as a threat to the next batch and can sometimes start to eat them). but it's really a personal choice as to how long you leave them with the parents, your best to just find what works best for you. some people remove the fry or the parents as soon as the fry is free swimming, but i'm of the veiw that the parents assist in caring for the fry and i've had the most success leaving them together. it's also good to leave them together just so you can enjoy watching their interaction with their fry for as long as you can, after all unless your breeding for sale or feeders thats what its all about isn't it  :). you might want to look through some of the old threads in here and decide what you plan to feed the fry aswell, there's quite a few alternatives in the way of food you can choose.

Yeah I've gone thru some of the old threads for con fry foods. Haven't decided what I'll go with yet, probably some liquid fry food or pkgd fry food or something. Then when they get a bit bigger maybe some baby sized floating pellets, I feed the adults Hikari Chichlid Gold mini pellets right now, but they make baby sized too, so I'll probably try that when they get bigger.

cool, i've allways just used the proccessed liquid fry food from an LFS for mine, once large enough i crush larger pellets up so that the peices are small enough to eat. that way you dont need to buy smaller pellets for the smaller fish and they can sort of "grow into" eating the pellets whole. i only use large pellets for all my fish, the ones that cant eat them whole get them crushed, it saves the expense of buying all the different sizes.

Note sure if this will work, I'm going to try and post a couple of pics of them with the eggs. Not that many eggs tough..maybe only 50 or so, but she is pretty small still. They both spend alot of time there fanning them.
