who gives a damn if its a hybrid or not, if you like the fish , keep it. just because its a hybrid doenst mean its not worthy of being a pet. its a crappy thing to sell the fish as on thing when its really a mix but it shouldnt be hated on because its parents arent the same.

i think you missed the point abit. its one thing to obtain a hybrid fish from somewhere or for you to accidently breed a hybrid (and in that case what you said is very valid) however it's a completely different thing to purposely attempt to breed hybrids (or "play god" if you will).

One thing that I haven't heard mentioned in this thread is that there are now many species of aquaria that are now extinct or gettin that way in the wild.  They exist only in the tanks of (hopefully  ;)) responsible fishkeepers.  If there were no people who keep these fish in its natural form (i.e. not hybrid), they would not be around anymore.  I would strongly recommend against encouraging fish to cross breed.  Although I am not violently against hybrids such as Blood Parrots and Flower Horns, I just don't see the point of trying to make hybrids yourself when there are so many beautiful fish out there to enjoy.  At the same time though I don't see the harm in keeping already widely available fish such as parrots and flowers or chastising the people who do. It just doesn't help anyone.

Yup, that would be my primary concern (loosing natural species), along with the mutation problem. Hibridizing fish is IMO ethically wrong, but there's not a whole lot we can do about it, I guess. If you wanna see a hybrid, check the others out, like suggested, but I am now convinced that my "Acara" (the male) is def. A GT/Acara cross. He's way too aggressive to be Acara only, and as he grows, he's taking on much more GT characteristics. Well, in time I'll know for sure, but he's already 3" long, the other one is 2". She shows the Acara charac. more clearly.
I suppose with this specific mix, it's not so bad, as they are both Aquidens species, where a JD and Con are VERY different.
If you decide to do this, bud, I suggest you keep it to yourself, cuz some people might get a bit angry about it, but please, do the fish a favor and leave them to their natural lovy-dovies! ;)

Yes indeed; another Spanish Inquisition is in order! I am personally going to go house to house in search of anyone in posession of a hybrid. I was kind of hoping tracey would come with me as she could help show some of these blatantly immoral scoundrels, "The finer (and pointier) things in life" :D LOL j/k  ;)

Seriously, I never really thought how damaging hybrids could be to our hobby until the other day. I have been in contact with several of the lfs in town in an attempt to get a hold of a quality Trimac as a gift for a friend of mine who just had his 10" Midas pass away. Anyhow to make a long story short one of the shop owners called me and said he had a nice male just come in. I ended up rushing down to the store only to find out under close inspection that it was one of these so-called red flowerhorns. I ended up going home empty handed and completely frustrated. Are the days of getting a pure trimac from your lfs over? Anyone else having problems getting one in their area?  :-\
