What is this fish, a Midas? So, out of curiosity, how did you all come to this conclusion, as the fins are long, and I have no idea what to look for in this particular species.

Actually if you look, you will see a hint of a hump,or at least I do. This really means nothing to me since it could be a small hump from a female or the beginning of a larger hump on a male.
Going by the age and size I really can't say with any certainty which sex it is at this time and don't have a great deal of experience with this particular fish.
To make a long story short I am making a rough guess that it is a female and can really only guarantee that with 50/50 accuracy

As for it being a Midas you could be correct depending on whom you ask
The quality of true blood concerning RD/Midas is considered by many to be the same fish in most captive bred RD/Midas fishes
There are however, reputable breeders that have a nice supply of F1 but, to the inexperienced eye they look virtually the same
I will have to say in my opinion that this is an RD

the little guy/gal was sold as a midas though I think it does look more like a RD.  however the big red one was sold as a RD and it actually looks more like a midas.  i got the two from the same lfs but about a year apart.

so you all think the little yellow one is female?  It's a beautiful fish but i was looking for a male.

To be completely honest with you, I can't say for sure either way. If I was a betting person which I'm not since I always lose. I would bet on it being a female but, It could be a male. If it is six inches in length then I would think the hump would be more pronounced and that is the sole reason for my presuming it to be female.

I agrre with Dave on that one.  Also, I have a comment on RD's and Midas.

It's a shame but,  I see this happen alot at LFS.  They sell Midas and RD's in the same tank, and they are mostly all sold as RD's.  It is a little hard to tell, but it's a shame for the common person just starting out in the hobby, that walks in thinking he's geting 2 RD's and then it turns out, 1 is a Midas, etc.  vice versa.

I've actually seen at 1 LFS here in Philly, A 9 in., Midas being sold as a RD.  It was written right on the tank. Just a comment, I though people might agree with or find interesting. :o

Hey, you're in Philly?  im right across the Ben Bridge in NJ.  Have you seen the fish store in chinatown.  The tanks are crowded with midas, bloodparrot, flowerhorns, GTs, arowanas ..etc.  All his fish are huge and in great condition, though the tanks are overstocked, but he does huge water changes.

Yes actually !! I have.  I work in downtown Philly and I seen that store once or twice. Unbelievable amounts of fish!

The only thing, he never sells normal fish like others do, like Oscars, JDs,FMouths, Jewels,Convicts,Severums, etc.

Has anyone else everseen a store like that from a self onwer that doesn't sell alot of the normallly sold Cichlids?

He only sells the Wild Angels too. :D:

it's an asian thing.  most asian family want those fish because when you translate their names into chinese it sounds like a word that means something good like "wealth", "money", "luck", "joy","gold".  FH are extremely popular because asians love the colors green and red.

The last time i went i saw marbled cons and JB cons,  he usually has gold sevs too.

Did you ever ask how much some of those fish are?

That guy is a con, though so watch out, LOL.  That's wh he never has any prices on the Fish tanks.  You always have to talk him down a bit.
That's why I have only gone there 2x's. Nice Fish, but constant negotiations.
