Like it has been said, a male and female betta cant live together (not saying your not telling the truth Raven, thats just been my experiance and what I have read  :))

IMO a 55 gallon is to big for a betta, as it gets older it will be hard for it to swim to the top of the tank to get air and will end up dying from a lack of oxygen. You could try and get another tank for the betta so your options are a little broader on what you can get. Just my 2 cents.

Well, I am not disagreeing with you guys, as the only experience I had with breeding Bettas was short lived thanks to a cute little destructive apple snail! LOL
The only thing I find odd is the "special circumstances" needed to breed them, as I didn't have to do anything. I just plopped a Female in with the male and Voila! We have bubble nests and eggs!
Well, just for fun, I'm gonna get a couple of small tanks set up and try experimenting with different scenarios. I'll keep a few males and a few females. I'll have one tank work the way Adam described in the first post, I'll have another work the way JC said in her post with the 'winner', and I'll try one the way I had previously, with NO SNAIL!! and see what happens. I will moniter their behaviours, and if there is any fighting or violent aggression between the mates, then they will be separated.
This will be fun and educational! Once I get started, I'll create a new thread, and keep you guys posted with pics, etc.. We'll see who's the successful fry raisers first! I love Bettas, this is gonna be fun! /><> Babies! Babies everywhere! hahahahahahaha! /><>
