Urau Cichlid
« on: October 25, 2004, 07:50:56 PM »
Does anybody know anything about the Urau cichlid? I know they are beautiful fish, and one of the more peaceful cichlids. Can you guys give me some more info on them? I am contemplating getting one for my tank but dont know very much about them.

Nice Post Tracey! They are beautiful Fish, because it's true.  I never really alot of them at all.

1 fits a 55 gallon, so if thats where you gonna put it, you may wanna think about that if your gonna add other fish with it.

imo, a 12" fish deserves a 75 gallon.  55's are best for fish that won't exceed 8".  ><:

Uarus prefer to be in groups of at least 2, they don't like to be alone, and though their maximun size is 12" it will take them years to achieve that.

They are one of the most pacific cichlids, i have my pair with my discus, and never had any problems between them, and their water parameters are too similar since they are neiighbors.

i don't know where you are, but here in Mexico is very hard to find them, and when you do, $100 USD a pair is not rare at all.

Your correct Odyssey.  I have heard they can go with Severums, also. They would need a big tank to be with Severums, but that would be a very nice tank to see!  :D: ><:

><: agreed

but I disagree on them being real passive - mine WERE and everyone said they couldn't be trusted - I thought yeah right they're uaru's,then learned the hard way they can and will beat on and kill more passive tank mates.

My male uaru now lives with a male oscar - he is the boss of that tank too.

The local zoo had (might still have) some huge uaru's in a large display with oscars, chocolate cichlids and catfish and they seemed to do fine.

Might be some examples of individual temperments  ??? but I wish I would have kept mine more cautiously  :-\

Drive west  ;D theres a few places just over the PA/OH line (on both sides) that have 2-3" Uaru's (amphiacanthoides) for $8-$15ea RMS is one of them  theres also a few 9-10" pairs near cleveland for about $200pr. And theres a place somewhere near the state line that also has Uaru fernandezyepezi 2" $75ea (if your interested I can probally find out exactly where)
I've had a fish or two

Thanks for the Info!  But I live in Philly and it would take me  6 to 8 hours to get to Harrisburg, PA, let alone to the PA/OH line. I don't think the fish would make it, LOL. But thanks for the Info. That would be worth seeing! ><:
