Are Cory Cats a schooling fish?
« on: November 06, 2004, 07:00:37 AM »
Ive been reading every article I can on my Rio Negro biotope and I read that Cory Cats are a natural inhabitant.

However a couple articles said that they are the most happy is a group of 3 or more. Ive never seen this anywhere else, but are Cory Cats a schooling fish or are they loners like Plecos?

From personal experience, they much prefer having buddies around :)

They do alot better when there is 2 or more, but can live a pretty long time alone also. I had an Albino cory, at one time, by himself, as the only bottom feeder, and he lived up to a year, before I actually got another one, so they are very adaptable! :D:

while they could adapt and live alone i have always read that you should have at least two together and 3 or more is better yet.

That is correct.  2 or 3 would be better. then can if need be though, be loners.  I'd get a group of them myself.  Try getting 3 or 4 maybe, all different kinds. That'd be kind of cool! ><:

They school with pretty much anyone from their own class. Corydoras with corys, sterbei and sterbei, etc etc.

Yeah, but not as well as if they were with their own kind. My clown loach tries to hang out with my 6 cats, because he is a loner.

Tinman- if you have a pair, they prolly wont school that well. They usually need at least 3.

It's funny too, how  most LFS only sell the same types all the time.  There are so many different and better kinds out there.

It be kind of cool, I think, to have 1 of mostly every kind or atleast, alot of varieties, and see them all schooling together.

It is quite funny to see them 'school'. Generally, it's just a lap around the tank followed by some serious meditation en masse.

The prices do differ on the type here.  And I am not too sure about cross-breeding between the species, thats if you want to breed them? :)
