Need Help Sexing GT's
« on: January 06, 2005, 06:33:59 AM »
I need help sexing my two GT's. The larger one I was told was a female but I think it is a male. Any help would be greatly apprecaited. Sorry the pics are not so good. I'm still trying to learn how to get good fish pics. Thanks :)

The bigger one is definitely the male, in the picture with 2 of them.  The one picture has a little too much red in it, so I couldn't tell from that.

Little hints for you.

Males have more of a red/orangey outline in the tail and fins. They are also a brighter green and will eventually form a hump on their head. They are longer and grow bigger.

Females are more plain looking. They are more an olive color, than brighter green, that is in the males.  They also have a rounder stomach than the males do.

Hope this helps.  Maybe someone can add on to what i said.  Good luck!

Cool Thanks. The smaller one is more darker and drab in color than the big one. I'm was thinking the smaller one was a female. When I went and picked it out I tried to get just the opposite of what I had. The people at petsmart are no help at all when it comes to sexing. The thing that has me worried now is the bigger one chase the smaller one all day long. Thats what got me concerned. I have them in a 55g with 2 jewels and a couple of cons. The jewels have been acting up here lately and I don't know if thats what is causing the GT to act this way. I'm cfinishing a cycle on a 30G for the jewels right now. I'm trying to get an oppionon there sex aslo right now in the African forum. I'm starting to wonder abou them also. I guess this might mean another new 55g :)

Would another pic or two of the smaller one help? If I can get it to stay still long enough!?

Sure, if you'd like too.

The GT that is doing the chasing, is showing dominance, from being in the tank 1st.  He knows all the territories, so I'd suggest, aybe taking him out and putting him aside for a bit, while you rearrange the decor.  Then let the female get use to it for a little bit, then place the male back in and see what happens.

Just to let you know too,  I'm not sure if you have a plan, ahead of time for when these fish get bigger, but 2 GTs will eventually outgrow your 55 G. You may wanna plan ahead for the future. Just something to think about.

Hope that helps a  little more.

Ok.  Nice job on the 2nd set of pics.  The smaller one is Female and the big one is definitely Male.  Nice Gts.

I have a 150g myself, so beleive me when I tell you, you'll be extremely happy with it.

How big and what kind of Oscars do you have?

I have two. My Rosey Red is about 10.5 inches and Tiger is about 9 inches. I want a bigger tank so bad. Everyone says I have no room in my house for another, but all I can say is I will make room. Thanks so much for the answer. I just wasn't to sure. I will try moving the male and re-arranging the tank. How long shall I leave him out for? Again Thanks  :)

No problem. O0

It all depends.  Where are you gonna move him too?  do you have a spare tank to put him into for the time being?

Once the female settles in, you should be able to re-add the male shorty after, once she starts getting comfortable. Then we shall see what happens.

I have a 30g I just finshed cycling for the jewels. I have not moved them in yet. It shouldn't hurt for him to be in there for a day or so? He's about 3" or a little smaller.
